Cosmopolitan Yogurt (1999-2001): The legacy women's lifestyle magazine decided to branch out into the dairy case, releasing a line of higher-priced yogurt, branded as β€œsophisticated and with an aspirational nature” which only lasted around 18 months.

btw one thing I learned at the training i went to this weekend is that bc ICE isn't allowed anywhere in a business that a customer wouldn't be allowed, an employees only sign on a door is enough to cause them to need a warrant. "closed for a private event" guarantees the same

You’ve been clear in saying that Covid has not gone away. You ask people to wear masks at your events. But that attitude is not necessarily where the rest of the world is. How do you think about continuing to take precautions and advising others to do so when it feels as if society has moved on? I do it for a bunch of reasons. Firstly, I have learned that I enjoy not being sick. I know that the cost of long Covid is real and substantial, and I don’t want to run that risk lightly. I also know that I have many friends and people I’m close to who are immunocompromised. So for the sake of the people around me, I also don’t want to get sick. When I do events, I wear a mask for those reasons, and because I know that every time I do a talk, while the vast majority of people in the audience have probably moved on, there are going to be other people who haven’t. I think it makes a huge difference to them to have the person at the front of the stage wear a mask. It tells them, It’s not weird. So I do it for that reason, too. In terms of holding this line at a point when a large swath of society has moved on, I have written a lot about the panic-neglect cycle.

I appreciate this response from Ed Yong on why he requests that people mask at his events. www.nytimes.com/2025/02/22/m...

What my family lost in the Eaton Fire Altadena, avocados, and new flavors of climate grief

Today's newsletter is about how the Eaton Fire affected my dad's family, who made Altadena home for nearly a century. It's also about childhood memories and avocados and how rippling waves of climate grief can still reach you after you've already said goodbye.

5 years after it appeared, things we know and still don't know about COVID Five years after the virus that causes COVID emerged in China it still holds some mysteries.

It is truly wild that it is estimated that more than 20 million people died of Covid and the prevailing vibe is that the world overreacted. That is an astonishing toll! More people died of Covid in the US than in the Civil War. www.pbs.org/newshour/hea...

This image shows a big reason why we haven’t confronted the climate crisis.

Most people don’t think it actually threatens them - even those who live in high-risk areas like CA, FL, LA, TX - so they don’t push governments to act at the speed and scale required by science.

State will not require testing of raw milk that's sold to consumers as part of bird flu program The Agency of Agriculture is about to start a USDA-mandated testing program to see if there is bird flu in the milk supply. The state will not require farms that sell raw milk directly to consumers to...

Two things can be true:

Public health travels at the speed of trust. Responses built on trust will be more effective.

Viruses can exploit trust within rural communities. "Trust your raw milk farmer" is not the basis of an effective public health response.
