• If the U.S. military operation to interdict and destroy suspected narcotraFicking vessels is a “non-international armed conflict,” as the Trump Administration suggests, orders to “kill everybody,” which can reasonably be regarded as an order to give “no quarter,” and to “double-tap” a target in order to kill survivors, are clearly illegal under international law. In short, they are war crimes. • If the U.S. military operation is not an armed conflict of any kind, these orders to kill helpless civilians clinging to the wreckage of a vessel our military destroyed would subject everyone from SECDEF down to the individual who pulled the trigger to prosecution under U.S. law for murder.

Highlighted sentence at the end of the document reads: Again, the bottom line is that, since orders to kill survivors of an attack at sea are “patently illegal,” anyone who issues or follows such orders can and should be prosecuted for war crimes, murder, or both.

To me this thread points at an answer to both “how should we respond to the right on trans issues,” and “how do we counter MAGA’s appeal to young men?” The solution isn’t to act contrary to our values: it’s to defend them clearly and forthrightly, and show the other path.

Literally the authoritarian playbook:
1. Call your opponents terrorists.
2. Deploy state power against them.

There's nothing subtle or confusing or complex about what's happening. The *outcome* is uncertain but the authoritarianism is right out in the open.

The people who made these decisions were warned what would happen. They knew what would happen. And they chose this anyhow.

This is the danger to us all. First they build a secret police force and internment camp network targeting non-citizens. Then they threaten to strip political opponents of their citizenship. If they can do that, then any American who speaks up could end up in Alligator Alcatraz.

This is literally the definition of a white nationalist police state.

Political consultants have a tendency to re-fight the last war. But while voters in 2024 may have felt Dems were weak on the border, voters TODAY are horrified by Trump‘s campaign to kidnap their neighbors and friends.

And every state that needs to develop clean energy infrastructure more quickly (which is to say every state).
