of course there are larger systems and personal backgrounds very much in play but sometimes you just have to step back and say "i don't know for sure why someone would do that"

i think when something really terrible happens between individuals, often the inexplicable is a big part of it

this is basically what happened here with me, im still allowed to pick up shifts if they have an open slot for some reason but im not on the regular schedule. and there's less than a dozen open shifts a month and a bunch of ppl competing for them so functionally i don't have a job

some friends showed me high school musical when i was like 19 and i just thought "wow! this sucks" because you're supposed to watch it when you are 8

i feel like among people roughly my age there is a lot of nostalgia for the live action kidcoms that aired on nickelodeon and disney channel. zack and cody, wizards of waverly place, etc. i did not watch any of this shit bc it wasn't cartoons so i didn't care

i read crow cillers long before i watched inland empire so when i saw inland empire my first thought was "wow this is kind of like crow cillers"

fair enough. criticism is a dying art in general in terms of there being any venues that will pay for/publish it, it's not just comics

it's just a very subjective feeling i have that a lot of comics i see are too indebted to their influences to the point that it feels more like a tribute to existing work than its own distinct thing. but ymmv
