On one hand, we love human curiosity. On the other hand, we love carte blanche to delete things so

Did Tutankhamun have a dagger made from a meteorite? Wrapped within his mummified remains, a dagger has intrigued archaeologists for over a century. What was it made of, who made it, and why bury it with him?

🚨New Bad Ancient article🚨 from a new contributor. I am really happy to see this question finally answered - it has been sat on our list for quite a while now. @horusofnekhen.bsky.social has done a great job walking us through the evidence and scholarship.

β€œWe wanted to rid ourselves of the fashions of historiography,” Burns summarized at one event, β€œand make a film that simply shows what happened.”

That’s not how history works though. You’re making an argument about what happened & what mattered even if you don’t realize you’re doing it. πŸ—ƒοΈ

The penny arcade was dead.

The game fad of the first decade of the 20th century faded and the coin-op industry retracted.

In 1931, a reinvention of the arcade emerged and caught the new wave of pinball.

This is the story of Chester-Pollard and the Sportlands.

Friends, your friendly neighborhood scientists are struggling and many could use help.

But that help will not come from people who don’t know how grants or university jobs work thinking for two and a half seconds and then sharing the first thought that pops into your head as if it’s insightful.

We ran a randomized controlled trial to see how much AI coding tools speed up experienced open-source developers.

The results surprised us: Developers thought they were 20% faster with AI tools, but they were actually 19% slower when they had access to AI than when they didn't.

The printing press is not responsible for launching Europe into modernity, nor did it transform society overnight. Folks like Sam Altman & other tech boosters are obsessed w this misperception bc it provides a precedent for AI. A recent article I wrote touches on this. Abstract & links in replies.

if someone very sincerely believed in fairies and talked all the time about how fairy dust explains all of physics, the NYT wouldn’t approvingly cite their political analysis, because their grasp on reality would be considered suspect. but Yarvin-esque racism is exactly as stupid

Without exaggeration, the last 50+ years of biological research completely discredits every race science claim. It is the single biggest indicator of being a malicious dullard and a reactionary ideologue. The fact I’ve had to dedicate a single minute of my career to addressing it is absurd

There's a paper at the top of my Philpapers page called 'Can we repudiate ontology altogether?' and I keep misreading it as 'Can we repudiate ontology together?' which makes it sound like the best chat-up line ever

Last night I got access to a digitized film reel from 1969 that shows off a computer artillery game called Potshot. And to explain why that’s a big deal, I need to talk about Dartmouth and the BASIC computer language.

I don’t want to spend my day dealing with hateful classicists - but this is actually an extraordinary thing to say about a colleague (me) simply because she has organised an event that you do not feel like attending.

Luckily there’s little I want less than a job in the US, hey? πŸ˜‚

It is WILD that there’s now been a threat of withholding jobs made by a highly known and well regarded scholar on the List, based on support for *discussing* the use of cultural heritage as a marker of ethnic cleansing mentioned in a UN report.

"This is a Classicists List not a political one."

A field of study is doomed when it surrenders its claim to be relevant to the real world, to how we live our lives in relation to other human beings, & cultivate mutual understanding. Isn't that the very point of the humanities?
