The first couple of times it was rough...then I started looking at the numbers: how many queriers agents receive, how many authors the average author represents, how long most queries remain in the inbox, etc. If there's one or two slots and 7,000 manuscripts, a lot of good things get passed over.

The great thing about my latest query is I don't feel as vested in it as I have in the past. I know the stories are good -- 16 of the 25 have already been published -- so its just a question of finding the right person to represent the work.

I'd tell myself to start writing when I was younger... and to keep going, even when I doubt myself.

(This was actually so hard for me to take seriously and not write something facetious, FYI #pretendpanel 😂)

Don't try to be perfect, and keep forging on through disappointment. It's a long road ahead but I promise you it is filled with so much joy.

It creeps in. I just wrote a short story that has a line in it about Trump's desire to annex Canada and Greenland -- it provides some of the set up for the story. I've written another short story about the CIA assassinating someone.

I’ve written about politics as therapy and read about them for entertainment & education.

I wouldn’t want a steady diet of politics though. The escapist in me wants the good guys to win and often political themes are too cynical for that.

I have a manuscript I want to query, but I'm afraid it may be too political for publishers and agents at this time...

I view people who claim theres is *nothing* political in their fiction suspect. Either they're trying to con themselves, or trying to con their readers.

All stories are political, including mine. But if we're talking about writing *overtly* political plots that are *directly* confronting/centering governance, war, or systemic oppression, then no, I don't currently write those kinds of political stories. I can greatly enjoy reading them, though.

Yyyyes. Yes, I do. I don't engage with politics in my day to day, or I try not to, but I know it's worthwhile. And it for sure helps to read how ideologies look in practice.

Those opening hours of Disco Elysium were a nightmare until I'd done reading on Wikipedia!
