Thankfully he was wearing hi-viz and a helmet. ๐
I'm sure they would have used that irrelevant detail against him otherwise.
The bosch "Flow" app disables the motor and the battery, and you can mark both as stolen so that the bike shop can't repair them (without knowing that they were stolen).
11.02.2026 06:53 โ ๐ 4 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0Respect for doing your bit to protect yourself and companion. I just wish our RSA had some clue about road safety instead of just marketing hi-viz. They have no engineers on staff and had no response to the Government ducking out of implementing the decision to have default 30kph urban speed limits.

Cyclists do not automatically have the right of way.
Helmets are not a legal requirement.
Similar to cars, they were introduced for racing. In cycle friendly cities on the mainland (Europe), helmets are rarely worn.
Lights are a legal requirement during hours of darkness.

Same story without the paywall. Disgraceful and self-proclaimed personal bias by the judge.

The Government dithers and people die. This year could see the highest death toll on the roads in a decade.
In Ireland you can become a Fine Gael Councillor, ask Gardai (police) to "sort" your speeding ticket and request that the speed van locations are reviewed by the Government.

Here is a golden opportunity for Fine Gael to make a real difference in reducing road fatalities, by addressing the grubby self serving actions of a Fine Gael Cllr.
Please take action to protect road users from the likes of Liam Galvin.

This is the kind of thing that has been going on for decades.

And you only need to read about the Maurice McCabe etc. case to understand how dangerous it is for a Garda to whistleblow.

On Ireland we are great at making laws but not enforcement. "The online Traffic Watch system has received 4,885 reports of dangerous driving in the first nine months of operation, but just 60 Fixed Charge Notices have been issued to drivers so far. "

Stop blaming the victims. Stop pushing this dangerous narrative. Start tackling dangerous driving.
Vision Zero wonโt happen while we ignore the people actually causing the harm.
Schwalbe Marathon Plus puncture resistant tyres for your daily commuter (or similar from another brand if you have a preference). PITA to fit but perform really well.
Maybe Slime filled tubes too, although I'm not completely convinced about those.

Thanks for highlighting this. It's so disheartening. Any response expected ?

It was almost certainly an electric motorbike which already require tax and insurance. Not an e-bike. @news.rte.ie need to improve their reporting accuracy.
A motorcyclist who will drive at and injure a Garda is unlikely to care about little details like tax and insurance.
Definitely need more automatic cameras for speeding and at traffic lights along with enforcement of illegal numberplates. Automatic geolocation/GPS speed limiters on motorised vehicles should be rolled out too, without the easy bypass features. The focus should be on reducing speed.

Spring is in the air & members & friends of Sligo Cycling Campaign are going to stretch our legs a little bit farther now & start a #MonthlyCycle to #GoStrandhill. This is not an organised event just a meet up at 11 am in Strandhill on the 1st Sunday of the month. See you there!
