bad writing can lowkey be beautiful. not because the language is beautiful but because bad writing can reveal things about the writer that "good writing" would know to conceal or distract from. sometimes when reading bad writing I feel a terrible, thrilling closeness to the author.

Yeah, I agree. Besides the structure, they need to spark literal (and healthy) dopamine-providing joy for me. If one doesn't, then I need to step away from it. That can be social, too, where you get excited for a friend getting a trophy done or a game mastered! It's frightening how *rare* that is.

Worth adding that I've also unfortunately known a number of unhealthy, clout-needy, and outright threatening people through achievement hunting in XIV's in-game system. Some of that intersects with MMO player typing, sure. But it's still worth acknowledging how awful many can be with these systems.

I personally really like achievement systems, but that's also just how I've come to interface with games; I appreciate the structure they provide, and the personal satisfaction they can bring. I also understand it's not everyone's bag (either for players or developers) and that's fine, too.

I've just read up on it. Honestly, that's a beautiful subversion of achievement/trophy systems in general. It's a unique way to oppose them on their face while giving the player a tremendous challenge that, ironically, doesn't give you that carrot at all. I respect the heck out of that.

That's in stark contrast to how big a deal the Dreamcast release was for me, though that's probably why I wasn't really Feeling It with future systems, for better or worse.

But I somehow still have my OG PS2, which is kind of shocking, given how much else I've divested over the years.
