In the name of Halloween, here's a scary fact for you...
Last week, we released new research with Ricardo and @hertscc.bsky.social revealing that air pollution from wood burning stoves and open fires contributes to nearly 2,500 deaths in the UK each year.

With #CleanAirNight coming up on the 22nd of January, we need your help to spark a conversation about wood burning across the country, ensuring everyone has the information they need to protect their health, the health of their communities and the environment.
22.10.2025 11:05 — 👍 5 🔁 3 💬 1 📌 1Fantastic to see @mumsforlungs.bsky.social new research covered in the @theguardian.com today.
Wood burning is the most polluting way to heat your home, contributing to a range of health problems including heart and lung disease, diabetes and dementia.
In 2021, we worked with @globalactionplan.bsky.social and @uniofsurrey.bsky.social to test ways of improving air quality in and around schools.
We found air purifiers in classroom reduced indoor particle concentrations by up to 57%:

Many people are still not aware of the facts about wood burning, or have been exposed to confusing messages.
That’s why #CleanAirNight is returning this winter.
Save the Date: January 22nd
Our #CleanAirNight campaigns have significantly increased public awareness of the health risks of air pollution from wood burning, but there’s still more work to do.
#cleanair
Wood burning is one of the biggest sources of fine particulate air pollution in the UK, contributing to heart and lung disease, diabetes and dementia. And gas cooking is a major, often-overlooked source of indoor air pollution and greenhouse gas emissions in the home.

As we head into winter, this research is a timely reminder of the impacts wood burning and gas cooking has on one’s health and healthcare systems.
