Oliver Hayes, our Head of Policy and Campaigns before our big win yesterday with our legal challenge against the UK Government, where they conceded that they’d made “a serious logical error” in their approval of the 90MW data centre at Woodlands Park in Buckinghamshire.

The Government has acknowledged that it made the wrong decision in allowing the data centre to go ahead without binding commitments from the developer on how they would reduce its environmental impact and agreed that the Secretary of State’s decision should be quashed.

Today the government have announced that they're opening a public consultation on the burning of wood and solid fuels in an effort to reduce fine particulate matter and smoke emissions.

10 years ago, Tony decided to get a wood burner. But after a while, he realised he was getting a headache after using it, along with other respiratory symptoms.

The legal challenge is the first against a hyperscale data centre in the UK and argues that the Government’s approval of the data centre without an assessment of its true climate impacts, was unlawful.

In July 2025, then-Deputy Prime Minister Angela Rayner overruled Buckinghamshire council’s decision to reject the development application for this data centre, despite the developer’s failure to carry out an adequate environmental impact assessment.

Hyperscale data centres consume huge amounts of power, resulting in significant amounts of new carbon emissions. Woodlands Park will use as much electricity as 38,000 households – more than a medium sized town like Stevenage.

In August 2025, Global Action Plan partnered with tech justice non-profit, Foxglove, to take the government to court over their failure to assess a data centre’s environmental impact before approving a 90megawatt data centre in Woodlands Park, Iver, Buckinghamshire.
