prescription orthotics are one of the assistive technologies i could not live without

put on shoes, heard something pop while i was going down the stairs, does that mean i'm good now? something popped back into place? lmao

i tried to pop downstairs without proper shoes and orthotics to grab something, on top of showering (where i can't wear them), and i made it like ten feet and my knee sort of seized up like 'haha nope'

i wasn't done procrastinating

also trying to browse public domain art and museum art and getting 'verifying you're a human' checkpoints every half hour, slowing things down considerably.

(those checkpoints show up to slow you down in a lot of random places now)

a couple things in the last year have made me pretty aware of the current background radiation online of constant crawling and scraping

like my neocities site has 30k hits and like 20 of those are from real people...

The thing with bluesky using AI to moderate images isn't that it's training on them, think for 10 fucking seconds about it, but that they are saying "yeah we outsourced that shit entirely, we got no control over it. It says label, we label" etc

I am just assuming, and have from jump, that everything displayed here is getting eaten by at least four different robots because there is literally nothing preventing it.

Even if you delete, it's not GONE gone.

It's why the art I've placed here is art I know already got got...

I'm seeing a lot of discussion about whether the ai evaluator the mod team uses here eats your art or not.

I don't have an opinion on that.

What I DO know is this site is absolutely open by design and the folks who run it value tech over people and have always demonstrated this.

i don't actually want folks panicking over a threat model that hasn't changed (it is easy to scrape and people are scraping your images and have been), i want us to talk about why ai moderation sucks

i'm gonna come back in a few hours to every layperson on here panicking about images being scraped for ai aren't i.

i mean, it's definitely doing what it says on the tin because i have seen some of the stuff that gets automatically flagged, and it's pretty telltale of ai image moderation.

as long as you are posting images publicly online, there are going to be bad actors feeding them to ai.

-i wouldn't be surprised if the bsky heads condone scraping shit to use for training generative ai models, but that's technically speculation at this point

-when you run stuff online you can take steps to make it harder for scraping to happen. i wonder if bsky does this

tldr:

-ai moderation is bad

-having confirmation on ai moderation does not mean that specific thing is scraping your images, nor does it change the threat model of posting images on a public site when we know scraping is a common practice

you can just set something up to slurp all the images from the firehose. maybe use some filtering criteria. maybe rotate your IP so you don't get blocked for accessing the servers too much. anything else would be needlessly complicated

One of the things that brings me the greatest despair in authoritarianism is watching people react to state violence the way they react to domestic violence.

By justifying anything and everything the perpetrators does through blaming a victim for failing to be submissive enough.

to get ever so slightly technical, they are using an already trained model (although they do update it) to look at an image and determine, 'does this share a lot of attributes with images we want to block?'

+ the programs that scrape images aren't ai, they're just programs

it's become very normal for social media etc. sites and apps to use ai image moderation. also it fucking sucks both ethically and in terms of quality of experience.

for the record the 'ai' program that's comparing images for automated moderation is very probably not scraping images for model training. they can just run a different, more efficient program to scrape the images that are publicly posted on bsky. many parties absolutely are doing so, at all times.
