Her experience reporting on conspiracy theories has propelled her to call out antisemitism while also attacking any conflation of antisemitism with campus protests that have been central to the Trump administration's attacks. "Most of them were extremely peaceful and also had a lot of Jewish leaders," she says, noting that she attended the encampment at GWU. "To call that antisemitic is an insult to the protesters that were there. It's what authoritarians always do: They attack education, Jewish people, queer people, immigrants, any noticeable minority to try to pit them against other people," she says, noting the prevalence of the "great replacement theory" among senior U.S. officials.

Growing up in post-9/11 Texas, Abughazaleh notes the effort her father made to break cycles of trauma by ensuring his children were around Jewish people. "I have lots of Jewish friends who also had the same thing, where their parents or grandparents, survived the Holocaust. There's no arguing with trauma. When you're traumatized and afraid, you lash out, you make notions that might never be dispelled. But your kids can do that. Now, our generation is kind of trying to continue the work and not just break the cycle, but join together," she says.
