Learnt something new and quite fascinating today, these lines of holes in the bark of small-leaved lime are made by woodpeckers to get at the sap. There were hundreds extending right up the stem

I do love the fact that it is necessary to pick out the weeds from organic spinach. Maybe the label should advise β€˜may contain weeds’….

Worse still, I’ve had experience of a β€˜reputable’ nursery selling them as native bluebells. I dug the bulbs up once I realised and took them back for a refund, but entirely agree, they should not be sold in this country

These were an unauthorised introduction at one of the most important and intact SSSI/SAC valley fen sites in Suffolk. They have since led to damaging trampling of the fen vegetation by photographers so it goes from bad to worse…….

The winter highlight in this part of Suffolk are the huge flocks of Redwings and Fieldfares that are drawn to the local orchards. These more traditional orchards are financially borderline and at high risk of being grubbed up. Buying local could still save these wonderful places if people choose to
