Got marketed Synchro Horizon by tabletopia on steam. I don't know how to put words to the specific brand of bland genericness this game gives off. Everything feels void of substance? And I'm not sure why. It's so weird

Super cool worldbuilding though! Lots of good points to the game. Which made it all the more appealing at first, then all the more disappointing when actually played

It's extremely rare that a game seems this high quality to me, is this highly praised, and misses so entirely, so profoundly with me. And not just me, my entire playgroup as well

It's like. They tried to make boardgame Monster Prom, but it doesn't work that well and the writing isn't nearly as enjoyable. They're trying to force you to play horrible people but they're not nearly characterized enough and consistently enough that it's not immersion breaking every time

Rewards kept being disappointing. Always punished for exploring or trying to play the game. All-smothering randomness. Incredibly dreadful balancing. Everything pulling in different directions and punishing you for engaging with mechanics. Rancid emergent social dynamics

But the mechanics? Just. No. Not for me. No agency. No fun allowed. No decision points. No strategy, no tactics, no expressiveness, no role-playing allowed. Bad for storytelling, bad for strategy, and horribly cringe social elements, cards against humanity ttrpg type shit

It's more that I'd seen a lot of high praise for it. Dice tower reviewers gave it 9, 9, 9 and 9.5 for instance? And every design decision seemed incomprehensibly terrible. Art, component, sound design, very good. Writing, sometimes good, sometimes gut-wrenchingly cringe and awful and bad.
