Iโve never met @davidnaimon.bsky.social, and yet his manner is such that I feel like weโre old friends. And I donโt listen to podcasts except for Between the Covers. This weekโs is a doozy. Very highly recommended.

27.11.2024 16:01 โ ๐ 1 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0Chad also stopped collecting data, I believe. And he was only keeping a record of books in translation through catalogs, not in comparison to the overall output (so there never was a new 3% figure iirc)
27.11.2024 16:00 โ ๐ 1 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0But I do think an up to date statistic would be useful not for those who work in the book business, but those work for international cultural orgs, those who are convincing government entities with control of certain purse strings the rarity of translation in this country.
27.11.2024 07:07 โ ๐ 0 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0Not the point of CJโs post, but I think itโs crazy there hasnโt been an update or rebuttal to Bowkerโs 3% statistic about translation in 20 years. (!!!) In that time, the iPhone was invented, the Kindle came to market. Even the idea of what it means to โpublish a bookโ has changed.
27.11.2024 06:22 โ ๐ 8 ๐ 2 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 1It has been 20 years since Bowker found only 3% of books were translations. Of the 100 โbest booksโ by the ny times this year a whoppingโฆ 4 are translated. How far weโve come.
