Omar El Akkad : One Day, Everyone Will Have Always Been Against This - Tin House In late October 2023, weeks into Israelโ€™s bombing of northern Gaza, the novelist Omar El Akkad retweeted a video taken by a Gazan man. This video showed a lifeless moonscape with endless empty streets...

Iโ€™ve never met @davidnaimon.bsky.social, and yet his manner is such that I feel like weโ€™re old friends. And I donโ€™t listen to podcasts except for Between the Covers. This weekโ€™s is a doozy. Very highly recommended.

I was just saying to myself this morning, I wonder if thereโ€™s anything more AI could do to suck all joy out of the private experience of reading.

Iโ€™d be interested to read any scholarly work by Pym if you have a paper youโ€™re thinking of.

Chad also stopped collecting data, I believe. And he was only keeping a record of books in translation through catalogs, not in comparison to the overall output (so there never was a new 3% figure iirc)

27.11.2024 16:00 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 1    ๐Ÿ” 0    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 1    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

But I do think an up to date statistic would be useful not for those who work in the book business, but those work for international cultural orgs, those who are convincing government entities with control of certain purse strings the rarity of translation in this country.

Not the point of CJโ€™s post, but I think itโ€™s crazy there hasnโ€™t been an update or rebuttal to Bowkerโ€™s 3% statistic about translation in 20 years. (!!!) In that time, the iPhone was invented, the Kindle came to market. Even the idea of what it means to โ€œpublish a bookโ€ has changed.

27.11.2024 06:22 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 8    ๐Ÿ” 2    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 1    ๐Ÿ“Œ 1

It has been 20 years since Bowker found only 3% of books were translations. Of the 100 โ€œbest booksโ€ by the ny times this year a whoppingโ€ฆ 4 are translated. How far weโ€™ve come.
