There is a piece of media that is highly regarded by a famous author, in which otherwise young and hopeful characters wish only for a peaceful resolution of their situation, away from the violent and damaging circumstances they were born into.

Sometimes good characters meet unfortunate ends. Sometimes evil prevails. Sometimes the world ends, even after a saga of the most heroic and morally-impeccable decisions. Sometimes, it just does.

If it follows its own rules, if it doesn't clash with its own nature, then it is as perfect as it can be, regardless of how the person passively partaking in those actions - the reader, the watcher, the observer - might feel.

everything in their power to help the characters and they still meet an unfortunate demise.

Art doesn't owe the consumer anything. Most times, it doesn't owe the creator anything, either. It owes it only to the story itself, to the characters, to the situation / setting.

In a recent piece of media, "fans" have urged the company to fire one of the writers for their reading of the story. A story, mind you, that they conceived and created. Other complaints about the same piece of media arise, people saddened that they have done everything right,

With certain media, consumers will throw tantrums over what they believe they are owed, feeling that belittling and harassing creators is a perfectly normal and suitable avenue to make their disagreements known.

The truth is, no one is owed a happy ending.

Suddenly, through the advent of honest communication from developers and even platforms like "early access" and subscriptions websites, the average consumer is convinced they have a hold on the finished product. While that may be the case to an extent, it's not an absolute truth.

I believe that one of the biggest and most damaging side-effects of the increased availability and approachability of authors, namely through social media, by consumers - art appreciators - is the entitlement that those on the receiving end believe they have over the creators.
