More day shelter space is a start but we also need to activate the winter emergency response sooner, stop discharging people from facilities without proper clothes, and stop confiscating tents and other survival supplies.

Opinion: Edmonton doesn't have to be the frostbite capital of the world Severe frostbite injuries are entirely preventable - together, let’s work towards a city where no one gets left out in the cold.

Edmonton has had a disturbingly high number of frostbite amputations the last two winters. With freezing temps on the way, both the City and the Government of Alberta must do more to prevent people from freezing in the cold. edmontonjournal.com/opinion/colu... #ableg #yegcc

DULF is a humanist organization that has saved lives. They did what the government has failed to do & regulated the drugs people were already using. That same government is charging them with crimes for not sitting idly by & watching more people die preventable deaths from an unregulated drug supply

DULF Founders Guilty of Drug Trafficking | The Tyee Eris Nyx and Jeremy Kalicum didn’t have permission to sell tested drugs despite good intentions, court finds.

Street drugs have killed more than 18,600 BCers. DULF worked with cops, health authorities, feds to try and source, test and sell drugs with a known purity and potency to reduce overdose deaths.
Their strategy was saving lives.
Today they were found guilty of trafficking.

Donald Trump doesn’t understand the drug war he’s fighting The president's war on fentanyl is just another way to expand state power and inflame fear

if you’re baffled by how trump plans to lower overdose deaths, you’re not alone. it’s pretty clear he doesn’t know what he’s fighting against. as usual, it’s not about the drugs at all. my latest for @salon.com

As we ready for the UCP's 2nd pre-emptice use of the notwithstanding clause in as many weeks, let's clarify what this means.

1️⃣ The move is constitutional. They *can* invoke it.
2️⃣ The UCP is not *required* to do this. There are other means to pass the law.
3️⃣ They should not use it, in my view.🧡

this is why regulation over these industries is required

the DEA's decision to not ban kratom was a good one (would've exacerbated the OD crisis)

but an unregulated market will always produce dangerous products for consumers

Populism, freedom, and democracy in Alberta (and beyond) Lessons from my grade fiver's homework assignment

Tonight's moves by the UCP are part of a trend: shifting Alberta away from liberal democracy toward illiberalism.

"Populists like Smith often invoke freedom, but their concept of it is tied to loyalty to the dominant group rather than universal liberties.+

Let's be clear about what happened today.

Premier Smith introduced a bill to strip Albertans of Charter rights,

denied MLAs the opportunity to debate it and the courts the ability to scrutinize it,

and did all of this from her seat on a jet to Saudi Arabia.

Medetomidine has also been *presumptively* detected via test strip in recent #yeg fentanyl/down samples and in a confirmatory-tested down sample from late August. Medetomidine is much stronger than Xylazine and may not show up on FTIR test if <5%. People need #SafeSupply.
