EU Set the Global Standard on Privacy and AI. Now Itโ€™s Pulling Back | TechPolicy.Press The draft Digital Omnibus could weaken core data protections and give tech companies more leeway in using European data, reports Ramsha Jahangir.

The EUโ€™s Digital Omnibus could roll back key parts of the GDPR, AI Act, and ePrivacy rules โ€” laws that set global standards for privacy and AI. Leaked drafts suggest companies could get more leeway on data use and slower enforcement, reports Ramsha Jahangir (@ramshajahangir.bsky.social):

Sigourney Weaver Says Ridley Scott Killed Neill Blomkamp's 'Alien 5' When He Became "Possessive" Of Franchise By Focusing On Prequels Sigourney Weaver says Ridley Scott's possessiveness of 'Alien' franchise led to the axing of 'Alien 5' from Neill Blomkamp.

"I loved 'Alien: Earth.' I thought it was remarkable. So interesting, terrifying about our world, and yet you could understandโ€ฆYou can imagine a world where each tech bro owns a planet. You know, itโ€™s not that far from where America is now."

Canada has lost its measles elimination status today. Undoubtedly, part of this is because of misinformation.

But it does not explain the whole story here, and simply attributing this public heath failure to misinformation absolves those in power of their contributing role.

An Alberta general strike raises many questions. Key among them are if โ€” and when | CBC News What are the legalities around a general strike? What moves could the Alberta government take to stop it? And if it does go ahead, when should it happen?

OpenAI faces 7 lawsuits claiming ChatGPT drove people to suicide, delusions OpenAI is facing seven lawsuits claiming ChatGPT drove people to suicide and harmful delusions even when they had no prior mental health issues.

Six people died from tampered Tylenol and the company pulled 30 million bottles off the market. ChatGPT is accused of urging seven people towards suicide, and OpenAI just assures us theyโ€™re still working out the kinks. Billions in investment, zero accountability.

It may be the longest and most expensive media trial in Canadian history

Iโ€™m ready to go public about it and I want to share more details with you ๐Ÿงต

it's pretty funny how peppers produce capsaicin so they get eaten and dispersed long distance by birds instead of puny walking mammals, but then some apes decided "oh hey pain is fun actually" and now the plants made it to every part of the planet

40 years ago weโ€™d have congressional hearings falsely accusing metal bands of putting backwards messages in their songs that told kids to kill themselves & now we have a planet-killing chatbot thatโ€™s all like โ€œbet you wonโ€™t commit suicide chickenshit bitchโ€ & the government is like hereโ€™s $5 billion

Part of the reason I think there isnโ€™t as much pressure around stopping ChatGPT re: suicide/psychosis as compared to stuff like Panera Lemonade is because people are inclined to blame it on mental illness versus the tech, a kind of victim-blaming mentality that fits neatly into just world fallacy

Shamblinโ€™s conversation partner wasnโ€™t a classmate or friend โ€“ it was ChatGPT, the worldโ€™s most popular AI chatbot.

A CNN review of nearly 70 pages of chats between Shamblin and the AI tool in the hours before his July 25 suicide, as well as excerpts from thousands more pages in the months leading up to that night, found that the chatbot repeatedly encouraged the young man as he discussed ending his life โ€“ right up to his last moments.

1.This is not the only known example we know of ChatGPT cheering on a vulnerable young person to die by suicide, this time it is a recent Texas A&M grad
2. Every single university that has invited OpenAI into our midst should be asked to account for their choices.
