Torts was good for the Flyers in a macro sense. The culture had gone to shit, the entire org had to be re-built from the top down and he was there to re-build it from the bottom up with the players. He was great...until he wasn't. The end was really bad but the overall work was good.

It doesn’t work. In pro sports every one has a role to play and the Coach’s role is to be the intangible tide that makes the team greater than the sum of its parts. Topper has never done that. He’s just there. Harper/Schwarber are more HC than Top and it shows in the POs.

It really has to get bad for us to say the Coach/Manager has to go. With Torts we got a glimpse into the most extreme psyche of a “hard” coach and with Nick the perfect example of a players coach who can lead from the trenches.

Topper is a delegator. He wants players to lead and problem solve.

In the 12 years since their last SCF appearance, the Flyers have fired 7 Head Coaches. Flyers fans have become experts in what bad coaching looks like. What’s been interesting to watch in that period is our disdain as a fanbase for blaming the HC/Manager and absolving players of blame.

The OHL isn’t the same league it was even a year ago. Without the top end players (like Martone and McKenna) it’s not the quality of developmental league it used to be.

I think it’s all about his development and avoiding another disjointed season. There’s only one way to do that: keep him in the NHL. If they send him down, he’s already missed OHL camp and games. WJC in Dec. He could get traded and if so he’ll miss NHL/AHL playoff opportunity.
