Rethinking dinosaur origins: oldest known equatorial dinosaur-bearing assemblage (mid-late Carnian Popo Agie FM, Wyoming, USA) Abstract. The origin of Dinosauria is thought to be deeply rooted in the high-latitude southern hemisphere (Gondwana). Nearly 6โ€“10 million years separates

New paper describing a new fossil assemblage from ๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ with sauropodomorphs & silesaurids, which marks the oldest appearance of #dinosaurs in equatorial Pangaea. Interesting implications for early dinosaur dispersal & #evolution

This fossil is of a lobed-finned fish named Osteolepsis macrolepidotus and was found in Scotland. The Devonian Period (named after fossils first found in Devon, England), is known as "The age of fishes" and was fish transformed into three major groups: lobe-finned, ray-finned, and sharks.

The Kishenehn Formation in Montana/British Columbia preserves some mountain fossils! There are a number of papers out there, but this one about three distinct groups of molluscs representing three different elevations/climatic regimes might be my favorite:

So, you want to be a palaeontologist and study prehistoric life, but don't know where to start?

Maybe you worry you're not good enough? That you can't do field work? Or you can't afford it?

Let me take you through different options for making it in the field ๐Ÿ‘‡(๐Ÿงต)

Fun fact: Permian Cathaysia (now southern China) was the last bastion of Carboniferous-style "coal swamp" forests, including the iconic "scale trees" (D, E) that were extinct everywhere else. They made it all the way to the Great Dying!
