I called my senators and told them this. Thanked them for their No votes but said I’m furious that Dem leadership made this deal and that I’m tired of them treating us like fools.

The older I get, the more tired I become of the uncurious.

Me, watching elite athletes: the human body is incredible. It’s amazing what people can make their bodies do.
Also me: I am trapped in a horrible prison of flesh. This slowly decaying meat robot is a nightmare and a terrible burden.

Absolute worst part of rib fracture is how gross it feels. Painful, sure, but also there’s really nothing that can be done to stabilize the fracture so I can just feel stuff moving in ways it shouldn’t be moving. Every time I bend or turn and feel something shift it makes me want to barf. 🤢

Of all the silly ways I’ve injured myself over the years, I may have reached the pinnacle. I cracked a rib trying to reach something in the bottom of the washing machine. 🤦🏻‍♀️

Wealthy people who just live like that all the time have no way to comprehend how much cognitive load having money relieves.

Sometimes I spend hours worrying and planning and trying to figure out work-arounds and then I realize I can solve a problem by throwing money at it. Having the means to do that is fairly new to me and not something I’ll ever do instinctively.

I’ve been fretting for weeks about having to fly solo with a knee injury and the various complications that entails. I finally sucked it up and paid to upgrade my ticket to first class and solved four different problems with one exorbitant expense.

Study after study shows that it's remarkably cheap and easy to solve the problems of homelessness and poverty with low-barrier supportive housing and universal basic income, but our own fear that someone, somewhere will get something they didn't "earn" keeps us looking for other (punitive) options.

It is said that nothing lasts forever, and often that is cause for sorrow and regret. But take heart, for it also applies to the reign of despots, to tyranny. They too cannot last forever, so let us usher in their end, let us outlast them.

My grandfather used to say "and Magda Goebbels made a great strudel" and I never knew what it meant until after he died my grandmother explained some magazine did a fluff interview with Magda Goebbels a few years before WW2 that included her strudel recipe and my grandfather, who hated the Nazis with the passion of 10,000 suns, thought it was an example of the media sanitizing evil people and would use the phrase when someone asked him to overlook a bad person doing bad things and focus on the good.

But too many of the slaves died in captivity. And so Columbus, desperate to pay back dividends to those who had in-vested, had to make good his promise to fill the ships with gold. In the province of Cicao on Haiti, where he and his men imagined huge gold fields to exist, they ordered all persons fourteen years or older to collect a certain quantity of gold every three months. When they brought it, they were given copper tokens to hang around their necks. Indians found without a copper token had their hands cut off and bled to death.
The Indians had been given an impossible task. The only gold around was bits of dust garnered from the streams. So they fled, were hunted down with dogs, and were killed.

After each six or eight months' work in the mines, which was the time required of each crew to dig enough gold for melting, up to a third of the men died.
While the men were sent many miles away to the mines, the wives remained to work the soil, forced into the excruciating job of digging and making thousands of hills for cassava plants.
Thus husbands and wives were together only once every eight or ten months and when they met they were so exhausted and depressed on both sides... they ceased to pro-create. As for the newly born, they died early because their mothers, overworked and fam-ished, had no milk to nurse them, and for this reason, while I was in Cuba, 7000 children died in three months. Some mothers even drowned their babies from sheer desper-ation.... In this way, husbands died in the mines, wives died at work, and children died from lack of milk ... and in a short time this land which was so great, so powerful and fer-tile... was depopulated... My eyes have seen these acts so foreign to human nature, and now I tremble as I write....

Please remember that the disgust people have over Christopher Columbus is not based on some modern, 21st century “woke” ideology, but rather on contemporaneous accounts of atrocities that make many modern genocides appear quaint in comparison.

Below, are the accounts of Bartlomé de las Casas.

Cockroach Wife Syndrome strikes again.

Every time I see some gamerbro edit of a female video game character to make her 'prettier', I always see something I have mentally dubbed Cockroach Wife Syndrome (in honor of the guy who accidentally conditioned himself to only be aroused by a fantasy of his cockroach wife Ogtha).
That is to say, there is a certain subset of gamerbro who interacts so rarely with real women, that his primary touchstone for how women look is fiction: often video games and anime. So when a video game woman looks too realistic--too close to having traits that one might find in real flesh and blood women--this is foreign to them. This is unattractive.
They have been jacking it to hentai and blender animation porn for too many years, and have inadvertently conditioned themselves to only be sexually aroused by the exaggerated cartoonish traits of animated women.
So now every time I see one such edit, I can't help but think. My. What a coincidence you've made her look more like an anime waifu. Truly dedicated to your cockroach wife.

Not saying that people in colorful costumes can’t be disruptive, but also, if there’s no push-back at all from the system, then they don’t feel threatened and if they don’t feel threatened then the impact is going to be limited.

Somewhat disagree. See: the Women’s March at the start of Trump’s first term. Huge marches, entirely peaceful. Accomplished fuck-all. Protests that aren’t disruptive aren’t going to be effective.
