Of course something so divine was crafted by a woman. In her time, Whitney Frishmuth sculpted many bronze female figures, mostly dancers, which explains the strong yet soft, solid yet fluid nature of this memorial piece. She was a well exhibited female artist right up to the great depression.

Reading an old book on cemetery monument architecture and histories (Going Out of Style by Douglas Keister) and was halted by this sculpture. I’ve always had a fascination for the typical angel statue, but this one is special. She is so delicately powerful, so quietly commanding…
