Say what you will about Kevin Siembieda -- seriously, go ahead -- but he was onto something when he called the sneaking skill in his games Prowl. "Make a Prowl check" just sounds cool.

"It's cash, blood, and oil in the age of the refugee
They're trying to buy our minds, we ain't selling
Bang, bang, bang, hear they're nailing down the coffins
Cut the strings, feel your heart start
Cut the cord, crack this code of silence
All our lives in the hands of tyrants"

I would quibble with D&D 5E having nothing to do with OSE, but I agree that there are big differences between those two. When I say "dungeon fantasy" I'm referring to the genre created by D&D and all the assumptions that come with that. RuneQuest is mostly not a part of that genre, in my opinion.

I get that. Just meant it's a bummer when you have to drop something you don't have full buy-in for.

That's kind of sad, but I totally understand.

A GRIDSHOCK 20XX scenario about trying to survive an abandoned (or haywire) Danger Room or Murderworld seems so obvious, suddenly.

Or "ha!", even. Apparently I turned German for a moment.

Ja! That would be quite a challenge.

I appreciate the response - a big deal coming from you!

I would play it again.

I had some quibbles with how the fight escalation worked, but it's a cool idea.

I've played Sentinels. I liked it but didn't quite love it. It's got some cool ideas, though!

I'm really interested in how Invincible builds social interactions into the mechanics, requiring them to recover Resolve (and therefore push rolls) - it looks very simple and I want to see how it works at the table.

I feel like these ideas aren't fully formed, but that's where my head's at right now, as I read Free League's Invincible RPG with an eye towards revising my own game about superpowered people. I'm not talking about a right and wrong way to play, but I'm struggling a little to articulate what I mean.

So, if you're coming at a superhero game from a stance informed by playing dungeon fantasy and similar games, the freedom and imbalance that having a superpowered character brings can be disorienting, even frustrating.

Superheroes can be a tricky genre to handle at the table because you're modeling a form of entertainment, rather than simulating a scenario. D&D might be influenced by fantasy novels, but it essentially created its own genre in reverse, with its mechanics becoming part and parcel of that genre.

Likewise, regardless of how you mechanically level the playing field, some players are going to feel disappointed if their crimefighter character with a crossbow "feels" less powerful than one who can control matter or lift a bus.

For example, trying to balance all the powers (and characters) against each other is probably folly, unless you're making a purely narrative game. Many of the genre standards are incredibly useful (or "OP") in the hands of someone who's not constrained by genre norms as a comics writer is.

"I feel like superhero games require a bit more buy-in, in terms of accepting what the genre is like. If a player (or the GM) isn't on board with that, it can easily become a bad time, perhaps more easily than with something more constrained like a dungeon fantasy game."

I posted this the other day on Free League's Year Zero Worlds Discord server. I've been saying this for a while, but am I right?
