Yeah, mine was like that. I wanted to book a hotel and I had to email the agency. They didn't respond for three days and of course the room was gone. Then I proposed a second one, a third one. Ended up spending almost doubled the amount. And it involved multiple people's time too. I just can't...

Oh I could talk about this all day. Here’s my biggest piece of advice: Create a very short “screener” survey (a pre-consent, pre-recruitment activity) where you ask about anything that would be relevant for eligibility and make at least one question a trap or attention check.

Isn't it to give whoever sends an email an idea why they're not receiving a reply within a reasonable amount of time? I often find them quite useful :)

The crisis in British higher education is acute + painful right now. If you are in it you already know this, but for those who are not I want to share what is going on. As strikes start at Newcastle Uni + others will doubtless follow, now is a time for solidarity + resistance

When I worked in UK academia I recall hearing of a Japanese man who was baffled at how Britain had decided to run its universities like firms. “Why? Your universities are excellent and your firms are terrible.”

Using a bad excuse from one person to make a point in a keynote speech makes me doubt this person's judgement in life and in research. Also, if anyone believes, even for one second, that Chinese schools, or any school on this planet, don't teach 'morals', they're for sure a racist.

15.12.2024 12:44 — 👍 1    🔁 0    💬 0    📌 0

It's not true that schools don't teach 'morals'. Honesty is one of the core values of Chinese culture. This statement is at best an excuse, if it were real. Professors hear excuses from people of all nationalities all the time and should have the ability to judge.

Such comments are actually very common in everyday life. Mostly implicit though. Always remember China has 1.4 billion people -- that's a quarter of the world's population. The percentages of good/bad ppl are the same as everywhere else, but because the base number is huge, you see more extremes.

This is new to me! I've always wondered whether it's laryngeal/pharyngeal -ise or -ize
