RJL's list of Akutagawa Prize Winners in English Translation is updated through 2025, now featuring translators' names.

(I believe it is the most comprehensive list available on the internet. It intentionally omits translations only accessible in academic journals, though.)

If you love the English translations of authors working in other languages, I recommend you keep track of the translator. Chances are they work across several authors - and they are mostly always linguistic chameleons whose work you will always enjoy.

there’s a man in my neighborhood who talked to my mom about what it felt like to be alive during integration. silencing the history is erasing it. refusing to acknowledge it and its nearness is refusing to recognize those that suffered.

The word circle (サークル) in Japanese, while often translated to “club” differs from the actual word for club (部, bu) in that there’s no hierarchy. In clubs/bu, you’ll usually have a buchou (club leader, captain, etc). Sports teams are “bu”.

this one normally starts an interesting discussion (cough argument cough) w the kids in the anime club I co-run: Naruto and the HxH kid are basically doing the same thing. I just sit back and listen to their reasonings on why they do or don’t agree.

I got to speak to Translation MA students at my alma mater KSU today! As always, I yapped about applying translation theory and philosophy to creative problems in audiovisual localization.

Always exciting when I can go off about functionalism and see a bunch of translators nodding intensely!
