Former TD Colm Keaveney banned from driving for four years after refusing to provide sample to gardaรญ Court told defendant appeared unsteady and smelled of alcohol after late-night collision

A refusal to give blood or urine samples in this type of situation should come with an automatic 10 year driving ban.

There is no valid reason to refuse.

Girl (6) dies after being hit by truck while cycling in Co Galway Child fatally injured in collision with heavy goods vehicle

Unless we have experienced similar tragedy it is impossible to understand the pain that has been brought on this family in Galway today. There is no excuse for our roads and streets not being safe for children to walk and cycle along.

Effects of Commuter Cycling on Physical Activity, Cardiometabolic Health and Body Composition

The aim of this study was to evaluate effects of a 10โ€week commuter cycling intervention on physical activity (PA), cardiometabolic health and body composition. A randomised controlled trial was conducted in healthy males and females (n = 26, BMI โ‰ค 30, โ‰ฅ 20 years โ‰ค 55 years). The intervention group (CYC) cycle commuted (148 ยฑ 38 min.wkโˆ’1). The control group (CON) received public transport or petrol vouchers.
ห™
V
O2max increased in CYC (10.5 ยฑ 16.2%), decreased in CON (โˆ’2.8 ยฑ 12.3%) (p = 0.03). HRrest decreased in CYC (โˆ’5.4 ยฑ 6.8%), increased in CON (1.7 ยฑ 9.5%) (p = 0.02) as did diastolic blood pressure (โˆ’1.2 ยฑ 7.5%, 11.9 ยฑ 16.5%, respectively, p = 0.02). Weekly logbooks indicated no group difference in total PA (Group p = 0.15) or change over time (p = 0.18). CYC conducted more moderate and vigorous PA combined (p = 0.008). No changes in body mass were observed (CYC: wk0 78.5 ยฑ 9.0, wk10 78.7 ยฑ 9.0, CON: wk0 69.8 ยฑ 6.7, wk10 70.3 ยฑ 6.7 (p = 0.17), or difference between groups (p = 0.61). Body fat (sum of 4 skinfolds) was maintained similarly in both groups (p = 0.95). Body fat (DXA) was 29.4 ยฑ 9. 7% before and 29.5 ยฑ 9.8% after in CYC (p = 0.97). The intervention did not alter Cโ€reactive protein, HDL, LDL, or total cholesterol, fasting glucose, insulin or HOMAโ€IR (p > 0.05). In conclusion, some cardiovascular benefits can occur with commuter cycling even if total PA and body composition are not altered. The increase in more intensive PA is likely responsible for the enhanced cardiovascular fitness.

Another study concludes that cycling is good for your health.

โ€œโ€ฆ commuter cycling โˆผ150 min/wk for just 10 weeks can improve cardiorespiratory fitness, resting heart rate, and diastolic blood pressure, all known markers of cardiovascular health.โ€

MetroLink will only hit โ‚ฌ23 billion if โ€œeverything goes wrongโ€ and โ€œbread costs youย โ‚ฌ10โ€ A claimed cost estimate of โ‚ฌ23.39 billion for Dublin's planned MetroLink is not part of the normal price estimate range. It is seen as 95% unlikely and seen as a "worst-case scenario", but media coverage has been criticised for making people think otherwise. MetroLink is a planned automated railway between Dublin City Centre and Swords, serving areas such as Ballymun, Glasnevin, Phibsborough, the Mater Hospital, O'Connell Street, Tara Street, St Stephen's Green, and Charlemont.

Days like today make my cycle commute an absolute joy.

With the world going to hell in a hand-basket, it's good to notice & be appreciative of the progress being made in some quarters, like the now car-free Sallins to Naas greenway. Kudos to Kildare CoCo for advancing this

Interesting that the @ccacireland.bsky.social are suggesting we spend approx. โ‚ฌ4bn on electric cars.... while these vehicles are part of the solution, cars cause congestion and it is estimated it will cost the state โ‚ฌ2bn by 2030....

โš ๏ธ Good to see the reductions on speed limits for Local Roads come into effect today. There's been a lot of confusion & clickbait around it, but todays changes are only happening on small, rural roads where the current limit of 80km/h is not suitable and most would drive at or around 60km/h anyway.

As the cold snap wears on I'm increasingly frustrated that it's still not safe for me to cycle in Naas because the paths are like ice rinks, uncleared, ungritted. Meanwhile, most roads are well maintained & safe for driving.

Why should pedestrians & cyclists accept this clear deprioritisation?

If @kerrycoco.ie can do it, why not Kildare County Council? It's not like it caught them unawares, or they haven't had time to address it. It's 4 days in at this stage, and still, nothing.

3000 school run kilometres on this reliable beauty in a little over a year.

Weekly shops, paddleboards, guitars, 4 children at a time, extra adults, plants, DIY stuff. This bike has taken it all.
My one regret? Not buying it years earlier. If you're considering it honestly just do it.
