So much space becomes redundant, marked by diagonal white lines here, because of right turning lanes. You could literally drive a bus through it.

Continous cycle lane, pedestrian crossing and traffic lights removed while even more space was given over to traffic to accomodate extra turning lanes on both roads

Interesting comparison between most recent Google Earth photo in 2023 at this junction at Carrigrohane Rd/Leo Murphy Rd, and 2nd pic from 2010. All active travel measures were removed not long after being installed here. There has been progress in Ballincollig over the years, just not here.

Taoiseach pledges Government will back effort to hire more bus drivers for Cork Micheรกl Martin said he has been working with the National Transport Authority on the BusConnects project for Cork city,

I welcome Taoiseach Micheรกl Martin's pledge to "back effort to hire more bus drivers for Cork"โ€”I just hope it's not another empty promise.

In 2025, Cork people can't rely on buses to get to school, college, or work.

Thanks Rachel Lysaght @echolive.bsky.social for highlighting this issue.

There's a 30km limit in the pipeline for urban centres later in the year. No dates or locations set in stone yet it seems.

Speed limits are changing from 80km to 60km today on rural local roads across Ireland. In Ballincollig, the area marked red in the image below, Curraheen Rd & Maglin Rd, has been reduced. The Lee Rd is also now 60km and there are lots of changes around Blarney and elsewhere to be aware of also.

Ya, infrastructure like this makes walking, cycling, getting a bus, a challenge. A junction like this serving so many schools, estates, shops, & much, much more needs to be better. Bus Connects really needs to get this section spot on.

This is the junction at Eastgate in Ballincollig. Narrow footpaths with obstacles, a pinch point for buses and no safe route through for cyclists. As a main artery into Ballincollig village, improvements under Bus Connects can't come quick enough.

A good reminder that cycle lanes and footpaths don't appear congested as they (mostly) allow people to move through quickly and efficiently.

Some great points raised here by @conndonovan.bsky.social about Station Road in particular but also more generally about active travel projects and the lack of a clear roadmap for when they are implemented.

Geraldine Herbert: Cutting speed limits and changing our car-centric culture isnโ€™t about restricting freedom โ€“ itโ€™s about creating it Could a city with a similar population to Galway ever reduce road deaths to zero in a single year? It sounds unfeasible, but it can be done.

Great article from @gerherbert.bsky.social

"The cars that promised us freedom have left us stuck in traffic, inhaling fumes and created soulless city centres with streets designed purely to serve vehicles....

The choice is clear, and the time to act is now."
