there's honestly a lot of both ignorance and malice going around these days, and it's probably going to be kinda hard to sort one from the other for some time.

i honestly dunno! the student being clueless and skating through undergrad on privilege and low standards *does* seem plausible to me. but so does playing dumb righteous conservative girl with the express goal of (rightly) provoking a bad grade and firm critique that can be misrepresented by TP.

i think it might be intentional grifting in two steps: [1] write a vapid bigoted response very poorly, ensuring critical feedback for both rhetorical & structural problems; [2] hand that feedback over to Turning Point so they can portray reasonable critique as out-of-control wokeness or whatever.

not even all human languages use tone to indicate questions in the same way, but i definitely perceive both a "meow?" (friendly, requesting, rising tone) and also a "meow." (declarative, instructing, somehow ends in a consonant that i don't know how to convey in text).

My personal guidelines for dealing with people on social media:

Assume everyone is a friend you haven't yet gotten to know.
Assume everyone is struggling with their mental health
Don't promise any emotional labor you might not be able to provide
If someone seems like a hater, disengage right away

Much like thinking all cats are Mean or “hate you,” thinking it’s an issue or taking it personally when a child refuses a hug is a small but consistent red flag for “I don’t care that much about others’ body autonomy and consent, just in general”
