So no, it was not just another concert for me, it was THE concert of my lifetime. A night to heal my inner child as I am healing my adult self as well.

The stars really aligned for this one. This tour happened at such a healing time for me. It felt like everything came full circle in a season where I was starting to pick up the pieces of myself and my identity that shattered when I deconstructed.

I’ve come to realize that it was never an idol but she does mean so much to me. And getting to see her perform the soundtrack of my life in one concert with 20,000 other people singing all the words with me and having the freedom to find meaning and joy in that was an indescribable feeling.

When I was old enough to drive I would go to target the day it came out to buy the CD. As her songs matured, so did I. Coming out of fundamentalism and evangelicalism, I gained the freedom to actually enjoy things and not feel shame when I am passionate about something other than religion.

As I grew up, I continued to love Taylor. I grew up listening to her music on the way to elementary school, middle school, high school, and driving home from college. Every time she released a new album my dad would buy it for me and surprise me with the CD in the car after school.

My faith community, however, would tell me this was an idol and sinful. Yes, I was obsessed. But in retrospect I was not sinning against God, I was just being a 10 year old girl with 10 year old interests.

Growing up in fundamentalist spaces I was constantly shamed for having any interests other than God. My biggest interest as a kid was Taylor Swift. My friends from school and I would listen to her music, decode her lyrics, sing her songs on the swings at recess, and watch her videos.
