I think in this case it’s well defined over existing primitives, there’s a similar system in use at AWS, I trust the author, and google appears to have now added it to tink. So enough people smarter than me have looked at it and seem to think it’s good.

yeah it’s very frustrating to safely work without adding more complexity which is like… more things to go wrong. I wonder if you could implement xaes-256-gcm there.

seems like a weird default, like FIPS or whatever sure but something like XChaPoly would be much safer. Feels like the rotation advice would be often enough to avoid more than 4 billion encryptions per key, in practice I wonder if it’s ever rotated.
