In the 1950s, National Geographic wanted Kodachrome nature photography that really popped in print. One trick was to put foreground subjects (hikers, etc.) in bright colors; it was called the "red shirt school". Dick Lasher's Pinto makes this the greatest red shirt school photo of all time.

A striking thing about articles Iβve read claiming to βstudy the effectsβ of generative AI on student writing skills and consumption of information is that (1) they nearly always find the effects are negative and (2) most βconclusionsβ are still written assuming that we must use AI, for some reason.

A small bird perched on a branch with vividly iridescent plumage that shimmers in shades of green, blue, and fiery orange, with a deep blue crown and a compact, rounded body.
My first afternoon at Paraiso Quetzal Lodge and I'm getting a nice resupply of Fiery-throated Hummingbirds. I don't know if there's a 12-step program for this particular addiction, but I might need it.

After the picture description there will be a story not for the faith heartedβ¦
Our black & white photograph captures a quiet, almost lonely riverside scene. In the middle of the image, a woman walks briskly along a raised pathway lined with metal railings.
Her silhouette is dark against the softly lit background of overgrown bushes and trees. The water below the path reflects light, rippling gently. Our shot is finished with a thin white border frame. Now for tonightβs storyβ¦
I call it theβ¦.The Riverbank Watcher.
The womanβs footsteps echoed softly on the concrete path, each tap swallowed quickly by the evening air. The river beside her whispered in slow ripples, its dark surface in enveloping the fading light.
She walked faster, clutching her coat tighter, though she couldnβt explain why. From the opposite bank, something moved, low and fluid, like a shadow with intent.
It followed her rhythm, pausing when she paused, slinking forward when she did. At first, she thought it was her imagination, the mindβs trick at dusk.
But then came the sound: a wet snarl, faint but undeniable, and the faint click of claws on stone. Her pulse quickened. She dared a glance over her shoulder, nothing but empty walkway, trees whispering in the wind. Yet she could feel it. Watching. Pacing. Waiting.
The moon crept from behind a drifting cloud, spilling pale light over the river. That was when she saw it: a shape, enormous and hunched, its eyes glowing like twin embers. The creatureβs breath steamed in the cool air, its outline twitching with restrained hunger.
She broke into a run. Her boots thudded along the path, heartbeat hammering in her ears. Behind her came the growl, low, guttural, alive with hunger.
She didnβt scream; there was no one to hear. Only the river, the reeds, and the thing that hunted her.
By the time the moon climbed high, the riverbank was quiet once more, save for the distant echo of footsteps that no longer belonged to her.
Sleep well friendsβ¦
