A fan of *all* the wingy-thingies, especially raptors. Also 4-legged friends (wild & domestic) & creatures of the sea & desert. I was @bruisermom in a former life. 😻

Really happy to find you here (& only because someone I follow reposted someone else’s post about the red Pinto)! I followed you over at TwiX, really got invested in the MSH timeline, looking forward to seeing what you’ve uncovered in the last 2 yrs.

In the 1950s, National Geographic wanted Kodachrome nature photography that really popped in print. One trick was to put foreground subjects (hikers, etc.) in bright colors; it was called the "red shirt school". Dick Lasher's Pinto makes this the greatest red shirt school photo of all time.

This is so cool β€” a couple years ago I followed this guy’s daily MtStHelens posts on TwiX, did not realize he’d migrated to BSky. Just amazing history, excellent storytelling, he knows how to capture his readers’ attention. And what a picture! Thx for reposting!

A red Ford Pinto hatchback angles across a narrow gravel forest service road, a blue enduro motorcycle on a rear hitch carrier. Tall firs frame the view. Beyond them, a towering ash cloud from a pyroclastic density flow billows skyward. Photo by Richard Kent Lasher, May 18, 1980.

A striking thing about articles I’ve read claiming to β€œstudy the effects” of generative AI on student writing skills and consumption of information is that (1) they nearly always find the effects are negative and (2) most β€œconclusions” are still written assuming that we must use AI, for some reason.

My first afternoon at Paraiso Quetzal Lodge and I'm getting a nice resupply of Fiery-throated Hummingbirds. I don't know if there's a 12-step program for this particular addiction, but I might need it.

Dude out here still boasting about taking cognitive exams when they only make you take a cognitive exam if they’re worried that your brain is slurry

Nah, if you’re 65+ they make you draw analog clocks, remember 3 words after 10-15 minutes, and something else (that I can’t remember!) for Medicare annual wellness exam. So, πŸ€·πŸΌβ€β™€οΈ, maybe they *are* assuming we seniors have mush brain…. But his definitely is mush, testing not needed.

Treating what Trump and his cabinet officials said at that meeting this morning as credible and then asking guests to respond to it is...not journalism.

After the picture description there will be a story not for the faith hearted…

Our black & white photograph captures a quiet, almost lonely riverside scene. In the middle of the image, a woman walks briskly along a raised pathway lined with metal railings.

Her silhouette is dark against the softly lit background of overgrown bushes and trees. The water below the path reflects light, rippling gently. Our shot is finished with a thin white border frame. Now for tonight’s story…

I call it the….The Riverbank Watcher.

The woman’s footsteps echoed softly on the concrete path, each tap swallowed quickly by the evening air. The river beside her whispered in slow ripples, its dark surface in enveloping the fading light.

She walked faster, clutching her coat tighter, though she couldn’t explain why. From the opposite bank, something moved, low and fluid, like a shadow with intent.

It followed her rhythm, pausing when she paused, slinking forward when she did. At first, she thought it was her imagination, the mind’s trick at dusk.

But then came the sound: a wet snarl, faint but undeniable, and the faint click of claws on stone. Her pulse quickened. She dared a glance over her shoulder, nothing but empty walkway, trees whispering in the wind. Yet she could feel it. Watching. Pacing. Waiting.

The moon crept from behind a drifting cloud, spilling pale light over the river. That was when she saw it: a shape, enormous and hunched, its eyes glowing like twin embers. The creature’s breath steamed in the cool air, its outline twitching with restrained hunger.

She broke into a run. Her boots thudded along the path, heartbeat hammering in her ears. Behind her came the growl, low, guttural, alive with hunger.

She didn’t scream; there was no one to hear. Only the river, the reeds, and the thing that hunted her.

By the time the moon climbed high, the riverbank was quiet once more, save for the distant echo of footsteps that no longer belonged to her.

Sleep well friends…
