What would you recommend as his best fantasy series? (I don't read scifi; only so many hours in a lifetime.) I've been meaning to pick something up and there's so much to choose from.

It needs to be said. Climate activism as a whole is still focused on finding ways to persuade society that action is needed at all, because governments still refuse to acknowledge the problem. Persuasion is emotional and abstract. More effort is needed on practical actionable options to help.

To be fair, the selling shareholders all get their money. A leveraged purchase is basically the new owners betting on themselves being able to profit enough to pay it back. But it also means they'll be prioritizing those payments, so short-term profit will be king.

To be clear: I'm mostly a "read at face value" reader. But I have found added appreciation of some books when I recognized allusions to prior work. It can be a good rabbit hole to go down. Sometimes I learn new things about the world and my place in it.

That's fair! I think my point is just that readers should decide how much of the conversation they want to invest in. If they want to read a new book at face value, against only today's cultural issues, no problem. Just be aware that it builds on prior work, which they can read to understand more.

Maybe the goal should just be understanding the influences of things you do read. Each new story is in conversation with prior stories. Hard to fully appreciate Redshirts with no knowledge of Star Trek, e.g. There's too much being written to christen a New Canon.

It's extra stupid/sad with music. Electronic tools already existed to make quality sounding music with synthesized sounds. They could already make great music without ever learning an instrument, if they had the song in their head and took the time to build it in the software.

Sidenote, I appreciate you sticking around and actually meaningfully responding, rather than just devolving into insults and giving up like so many people do online. These conversations need to happen with as many people as possible. Nothing changes if people don't care enough to try to change it.

What's the plan? Your utopia can't exist unless most people want it and work towards it. How do you get people to do that?

I wasn't talking about how homes are treated in the market. I was only talking about the origin of the phrases "personal property" and "real property". This is purely semantic.

I think that's a myopic view of the workplace. What about a business where "the boss" has a bunch of machines that he has to teach workers how to operate? Or a service business where the boss has the customer relationships? How should the boss be compensated?

Citizens United was a huge blow to human civilization. Lobbying is evil. Corporate financing of election campaigns is basically voter fraud.

I despise rent seeking behavior. I don't think corporate owned residential real estate should exist. I think profits generated by labor should be shared by all stakeholders.

Why refrain from using it? It's not an offensive term. If I'm a reactionary in your parlance, that's fine. But I absolutely agree the world would be better if everyone's material needs were met, and the resources already exist to do that. But I've yet to see a viable plan to get from here to there.
