Loved the Welkin Weasels books. No idea why T.E.S gave such a shitty dig at Jacques/Redwall on this cover

Extremophile by @ianthegreen.bsky.social is properly exceptional.

Like, imposter syndrome inducingly exceptional.

It’s making me depressed about what I’ve written and inspired to write better shit all at once.

Read it. As a matter of fucking urgency. Superb.

A Scottish glen with a winding river through it under a beautiful sun and blue sky

Favourite summer camp spot I've ever found up on the Cape Wrath trail. Had the whole glen to ourselves aside from the deer who came down at sunset to drink from the loch

Good to think on these and plan the future, in the rain and cold of winter!

Do you like maps in your fantasy books? Are you cool?

THE DEEP AND THE DROWNED is set in an insane archipelago and @headofzeus.bsky.social are good eggs, so this week I am putting the finishing on the TEN maps in this book.

TEN! 🧭

Some old futharc, the magic system in my first book had some rune based elements!

Man scuba diving

Man scuba diving

For my nautical fantasy I learned to scuba dive, to sail, consulted a navy captain about swordfighting, studied iguana biology, swam in lochs and rivers and seas, mucked about endlessly with archery and axes and knives

I mean I did all that before I decided to write it, but it still counts

Finally I can say that I can't wait to read this incredible book; it was intended to be part of the anticipated releases list, but things happened.

And do yourself a favour, read Ian Green's books!

😂 no I need art to sell books! though, stationary notebooks seem to sell for more than paperbacks these days...maybe I could lure people in by pretending to be a delicious pile of blank pages

My essay in the @strangehorizons.bsky.social criticism special is up! I muse about genre, vibes and the difficulty of pinning things down in an ever-shifting landscape.

Recent Read: Extremophile by Ian Green

My largest complaint is I wanted more of what’s been offered: of the despicable villains and the body horror they wreak; crunchy world building and a greater exploration of biohackers and body modifications.

Horrific appetites and mysterious magic counterpoint the complexity and tenderness of people trying to do their best. A world that combines the fading of Earthsea with vibrant beauty and verdancy of South East Asia, Saltswept by Kataline Watt is a delight.

Could you read the second book without reading THE LAST BLADE PRIEST?

Sure, but why deny yourself. Yes you can watch a sunset without watching a sunrise. Do both, be happier. Ingest more good things. Your brain deserves it.

Here it comes! "The Dead Man's Empire", the long-awaited second book in the Holy Mountain series! Is it a sequel to "The Last Blade Priest"? Yes! But in theory you could read it without reading TLBP!

I'm reading book 2 THE DEAD MAN'S EMPIRE right now and it is great- the first book THE LAST BLADE PRIEST is one of my favourite fantasy novels of the last few years, utterly original, some of the imagery has been etched indelibly on my brain in a way few books manage 🐦
