Water vole restoration in the Upper Thames Abstract. A replicated reintroduction experiment of water voles Arvicola terrestris in the Upper Thames was undertaken to reverse the species’ decline, and

Years ago, I was lucky enough to spend a few days helping a colleague from @wildcru.bsky.social with a soft release of water voles. Beautiful animals πŸ’œ Here’s a book chapter about that project: academic.oup.com/book/26851/c...

Wild boar breeding populations have also re-established here - but that was from from escapes and illegal releases, rather than organised reintroductions.

Excited to share our preprint that describes the mechanism of action of an historical infection remedy called Bald’s Eyesalve. In this preprint, we show that Bald’s Eyesalve has multifaceted mechanism of action against both S. aureus and A. baumannii (1/n).

A cartoon showing the various targets of reconstructed eyesalve against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria. It targets the cell membrane, as well as several intracellular targets including nucleotide biosynthesis. In S. aureus, it also affect quorum sensing.

Remember the medieval remedy we reconstructed years ago? We've now dissected the various ways it attacks and kills bacteria! Preprinted & submitted, led by @tosinorababa.bsky.social & Jess Furner-Pardoe w/ many collaborators #MicroSky #Ancientbiotics www.biorxiv.org/content/10.6...

I know what they're getting at with the "could put jobs at risk" but can we focus on the immediate impact? Each suspended round at MRC and BBSRC means about 80 fewer postdoc jobs and the retrospective cuts at MRC add another 30 or so

We discuss how historical remedies are potential sources of treatments for AMR infections. We focus esp. on tests for interactions between compounds present in these complex mixtures. Fig below shows key moments in the history of human use of three NPs (artemisinin, honey, Ξ²-lactams) #MicroSky

What's the best way now to advertise PhD projects to potential students? Twitter used to be great but not now for obvious reasons and BlueSky seems too curated to have that research to prospective students
