If I had to speculate, Russia is holding the "peace negotiations" to give them time to destroy Ukraine's energy infrastructure, to kill more Ukrainians, and to pulverize more communities. The USA - specifically MAGA - is complicit. Zelenskyy is not naive to what is going on.

Zelenskyy's greatness doesn't come from being a comedian or a celebrity. He had a proven track record of managerial success. We need someone who really wants to do the work.

Their research shows that 2,919 civilians were killed by Russia in Ukraine, and 17,775 more were injured.
The Kremlin is now blocking access to the database of dead and wounded Russian soldiers, trying to hide the scale of losses.

I'm not sure if he thinks it might actually happen, but appearing cooperative buys time at the very least.
