That's exactly it. She wasn't just brilliant, she was unique. There are other actresses who are as talented, but she brought a very particular energy and style to everything she did.

I was once in an acting class with a woman who would occasionally grimace & make weird hand movements when she was on the floor working. She explained that she was punching the imaginary parrot on her shoulder who whispered negativity/doubt/criticism in her ear.

I've done a few shows with a director who has the cast do this on the afternoon of opening night just before the supper break. (In these parts we call it an "Italian".) Always helps to shake off the nerves, get people out of their heads, & rev up the energy.

I had to look it up. Given my Welsh heritage, I'm surprised I'd never heard of it before. Thank you!

an extraordinary person with an extraordinary legacy who nevertheless didn’t take herself too seriously

when Gary Larson published this cartoon, she was in Africa and her institute was horribly offended and drafted a complaint

the whole thing was defused when she returned - she found it funny

Bertrand Russell, at 89 years old, to Sir Oswald Mosley, a man most famous for founding, in 1932, the British Union of Fascists.

I'm all for civil discourse. But everyone can and should draw a line at who they will talk to.

Notice that Russell did not demean himself with incivility, either.

This is why public broadcasting is crucially important to the health of a democracy.

Speaking of poor route management, the St. Clair streetcars are constantly bunched. Unlike the 505, the 512 has dedicated lanes/right of way (don't know the technical term.) Absolutely no excuse for bunching.

That route is AWFUL. I think it's partly because street parking is allowed on Dundas. Can't imagine another major metropolis where that would be the case.

CABARET JOKES ARE ANNOYING TO NAZIS' PROPAGANDA LEADER

BERLIN, Nov 25 -- Propaganda Minister Paul Joseph Goebbels is extremely annoyed over sly digs at nazi measures made by the more daring cabaret entertainers.

Sometimes they provoke roars of laughter at vaudeville shows with barbed remarks about certain phrases of the nazi program.

The annual join meeting of the "strength through joy" movement and the reich culture chamber today provided an occasion for Goebbels to vent his ire at what he termed "frivolous comment on serious affairs of the state.

"Why don't they make fun of the Jews?" he demanded sardonically.
