I was so excited to learn how many Spanish words are derived from Arabic. Did you know azúcar comes from as-sukkar? Other cool ones: algodón/al-quton, álgebra/al-jabr, hasta/hatta, tarea/tariha. And for Palestinian liberation: sandía/sindiyyah. It makes me want to learn Arabic even more.

The Democrats vote as a caucus under the leadership of Schumer. They decided collectively who the 8 would be to vote yes and who would vote no to protect their seats.

Harm to SNAP recipients, federal workers, and others is real. In a normal democracy it’d make sense to prioritize reducing that harm in the short term.

In a rapidly backsliding democracy, harm is happening no matter what. Preventing authoritarian consolidation is the most harm-reducing move.
