WIP Gundam Artifact Nightingale

Went with a no-mask fix-later approach. I'm finding that all the over spray is making is hard for me to tell if I like the direction the model is progressing. Also not liking how hard it is to predict the result color when pre-shading.

Making some progress on this Gundam artifact nightingale. at this scale you can get pretty far without doing any sort of masking. need to decide what my base color is going to be

it also won't crack plastic because it's just thinned with water, but that does mean you need to seal it with topcoat

yesterday I tried panel lining using ak weathering pencils. they're water soluble so u can grind the pencil wet into a paint tray and then apply it with a thin brush, then clean up with a wet cotton swab. more tedious but more forgiving

fwiw my first kit was MG Buster Gundam and I had a good time. if you mess up there's always the opportunity to learn how to fix it or fix it later when you've gotten more experience

a lot of glass files will buff it way too shiny, and they're only good for flat surfaces. usually sanding up to 2000 or 3000 grit with a soft sanding stick will get it to match the factory finish

I picked up the red/gold version of this one but I think if i ever get around to building it I'm gonna do a palette swap

I purposefully allowed myself to make lots of tiny masking mistakes since this kit was going to be annoying no matter what, and I got a ton of practice fixing those mistakes.

more likely in the future to fix little mistakes on airbrushed kits now that I'm not afraid to go back and adjust

this kit all came on one runner. each limb is a clamshell of two parts, so every color that needs to be painted also needs to be masked. most colors were done with an airbrush but I did the red and some of the metallics by hand this time.

ruitools has a 17 dollar nipper that gets you 90% of the way to godhands. saying this as someone who uses godhands for everything

paint progress. got upper body inner frame and accessories painted

diffuse it thru something translucent like plastic or parchment paper tho so you don't get hard shadows

use the sun. better and cheaper than any led lighting if you can catch it during the right weather and angle

gx uv gloss. I think maybe too much thinner and too wet of a layer

glad this happened on a Gundam that is grey in the anime. id be a lot more upset if this happened on a gramps or calibarn

was trying to go for white. I think the topcoat melted the highlight colors cause it turned back to grey, even though the white highlight had almost a week to dry. #gunpla

gunpla build night. first in a while. will paint another day. planning on grinding thru all my high grade kits and worrying about paint later when inspiration hits. trying to cull the backlog. it's tough though cause I don't like how unpainted models look next to my more finished models

can you push it out from the top side on the second image? find a random small object you can press into it or make something out of the runners to do it
