This is so true and important!

If you're in the Boston area, I'll put a bunch of local mutual aid groups below. ๐Ÿงต:

I loved this show! I wish it had a bigger audience at the time, but I think it has kept finding people over the years.

Duane Kearns Puryear, holding his panel for the AIDS Memorial Quilt. It reads, in block letters: "My name is Duane Kearns Puryear. I was born on December 20, 1964. I was diagnosed with AIDS on September 7, 1987 at 4:45 PM. I was 22 old. Sometimes, it makes me very sad. I made this panel myself. If you are reading it, I am dead..."

There are several great resources to learn about Duane, his advocacy, his family, his panel, and the politics of memory and re-creation, especially this one by The Dallas Way: http://www.thedallasway.org/stories/written/2021/9/19/duane-puryears-and-the-quilt-panel

Dear John,

I don't know why I have to tell you this today (but I do) โ€” perhaps it's because when I look out into the fog all I can see is the hairs of your adorable chest. I'm terribly in love with you, and have been for such a long time, ever since the first time Frank took me to your apartment. I looked around at your beautiful paintings and suddenly everything I'd ever felt about you turned into a diamond or a rose or something โ€” anyway I went striding up and down while Frank played Poulenc and felt exactly like the Ugly Duckling the day he found he was a swan.

Then you came home and I didn't think I could ever look at you or to you again, all I could do was giggle and snort and twitch. But I've looked at you a lot since then, and there isn't anybody else in the world that I want to look at; or want, for that matter.

It seems to me that I've been so GOOD that I couldn't hate myself more. I don't see why I couldn't have been born a robber baron type instead of a fool.

Now I'm going down and set 57th Street on fire to keep you warm.

This is all nonsense. I love being in love with you, it makes even unhappiness seem no bigger than a pin, even at the times when I wish so violently that I could give my heart to science and be rid of it.

With all my love,
Jimmy

letter from james schuyler (poet) to john button (painter), 1956. this is IT for me. this is love, it's been captured, it's done, we can all pack it up. "and suddenly everything i'd ever felt about you turned into a diamond or a rose or something"

At least we know we're in the right on this and just have to keep doing what we can โœŠ๐Ÿป I'm working to make my Elementary classes understand it's not as cool or useful as people might say it is, so by the time they get to high school or college they may not be as likely to use it. I can hope at least.

I'm so sorry you're going through this. It's absolutely bonkers how much it has been embraced, especially in Education. I'm the very anti-ai voice in our Library Department and always feel like am outsider for speaking up. Like, what are we even doing here?!

Through the end of June they're playing the London cast of Next To Normal which is SO GOOD but really emotionally devastating. Also Yellow Face and Kiss me, Kate. It's always a mix of stuff but definitely worth it!
