They are so high on their own supply they don't even comprehend the fact that the argument "this isn't a social media platform, its value has nothing to do with that function, the value is in the protocols." is silly AND probably unintelligible to the average user.

I think there is a strong argument to be made that reality TV pioneered the entire influencer phenomenon, and while the internet/social media popularized the idea that everything must be monetizable/your whole life is a public branding exercise, reality TV gave influencers the tools/vocab to do it.

That behavior is why my pet theory is that LinkedIn is actually the most toxic of the social media sites.

I don't know how you fix it without a lot of people being willing to acknowledge being wrong and wanting to fix it. Haven't seen a lot of that so far though.

He lies about so many things that a lot of people have adopted the excuse "that's just how he talks," which seems related to the phenomenon of "the things he says that I don't like are impossible, just bluster, but he *can* do the things I like."

It did occur to me that it's not totally fair to Urban on a lot of fronts: Kubrick is dead, he's not an actor, "my wife the sex wendigo" isn't a traditional country song theme, and he can't really write country songs anyways. But even then the option not to complain about it was still open!
