I'd never heard of this terrible low budget SF film, The Yesterday Machine, till #TheMadsAreBack riffed it, and I've been watching bad movies for fun for about 60 yrs. It's pretty terrible, which of course, made for a great comedy presentation. Downloads available at @dumb-industries.com 🎬💙 #MST3K

Goldie Hawn was interviewed at the Concert for Tibet and all she wanted to talk about was the Dalai Lama, so Pavement sort of drowned her out.

It makes me sad that nobody I have ever been attracted to, or even married to, has wanted my attention 1/10th as much as LinkedIn does.

I suggest it is to lower the average lifespan of working people. If they live past their productive years, working people impose an undue burden on the wealthy. This seems to be the core of conservative economics.

Things that have extended the average lifespan of working people:
Unions
Healthcare (through unions, Medicare and Medicaid)
Universal public education
Labor laws
Environmental regulations
Social Security

I hate all of this in almost every way a thing can be hated. I hate the factless waffle that surrounds Big AI’s every improbable goal. I hate how insipidly stupid, or just plain evil, those goals so often are, and the yawning chasm between them and any form of achievable reality. I hate that Big AI’s successes are inflated and its failures ignored — or are even categorised as hilarious mis-steps, like when AI chatbots tell people to eat poisonous mushrooms, put glue on pizza, or make air diffusers from chlorine gas. I hate that Big AI consumes so much energy that every time you generate a six-fingered portrait of Anne Frank or a scene from the Vietnam war in the style of Studio Ghibli, you might as well just kill a polar bear with a crossbow. I hate that it can run roughshod over every copyright law and environmental protection on the planet in pursuit of the data it needs to continue failing, with no consequences save for the enrichment of the worst people on Earth, who have managed to make all of this magical bullshit seem sensible to an intellectual class comprised of people I wouldn’t trust to print an email.

On hatred.

The lesson for universities is you may as well fight back. You'll lose the money either way. The only question is whether you keep your dignity.

I think the result is anti-authority, regardless of the behind-the-scenes dynamics. Plenty of punk bands have been headed by control freaks :)

Thanks for reading and promoting! I wasn't aware of that part of the story. I don't think I painted Lazzo specifically as anti-authority (I mostly quote him on the DIY stuff), since the show was certainly the result of a lot of great creative people working together.

I'm very proud of this piece. I channeled my former academic self to write a detailed critical analysis, but drew a lot of stylistic inspiration from David Foster Wallace and Chuck Klosterman. Most thoughtful academic writing is dry as dirt, and most non-academic writing is surface level and dull.
