here is a direct quote from Thielβs 2023 Catholic University of America lecture "Nihilism is Not Enough" complaining about the average age of NIH grant recipients at ~35 to be too old. he has an axe to grind

20.02.2026 02:17 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0hey man, you could always get more alienating. for example i spent the past couple of years getting into ambient space jazz. the Apple Music playlists make terrible track-level suggestions but the artist catalogues are out of this world (figuratively)

19.02.2026 18:19 β π 3 π 0 π¬ 1 π 1i think if you're entertained by him, you should follow your whims for sure. relying on secondhand interpretations of Kojeve that weave in bio details about how his interpretations played themselves out in his life, you can't go wrong, and every biography of him does it. have fun reading friend
17.02.2026 20:22 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0bio pretty revealing for the way his interpretation of Solovyov's work played itself out in the type of person he was. great psychoanalytic reading!
17.02.2026 17:13 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0already in the weeds with his references, and he's not a great guy to get your interpretation of anyone else from due to that specificity and the way he fits together against the grain readings with standard interpretations.
i'm in the weeds with all those guys, but not Solovyov, so i found Love's
in the history of dialectics and the philosophy of history, Nietzsche's read of Hegel, Marx's read of the Philosophy of Right), he's really REALLY fun. but honestly he's so in it with so much other work that it can be hard to see how what he's doing is unique and specific to him if you're not
17.02.2026 17:13 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0i admittedly have a complex relationship to Kojeve, because he had the same dissertation advisor as Hannah Arendt, whose work i study. i think if you're already familiar with various interpretations of Nietzsche (especially Heidegger's and Jaspers') and various interpretations of Hegel (eg, debates
17.02.2026 17:13 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0the Jeff Love biography of Kojeve is really informative too, especially as to where his work is influenced by Solovyov. you may have already read that one though!
17.02.2026 16:51 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0she also repeatedly calls him a striver and itβs this point that for her vacates any monstrous tendencies he would have. itβs precisely the fact that he participated in the fascist regime for arbitrary social soft power that he did not know how to leverage that made him a clown rather than a monster
17.02.2026 13:43 β π 2 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0every Jarrett piece to me starts with "ah yes, correct and normal piano sound" but hits "the hell is that, ugh" territory before minute five. do you or your dad have any recs for Jarrett tunes?
16.02.2026 13:14 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0i also feel this way about Keith Jarrett on the ivories, except i havenβt found a stand out performance i can appreciate yet. my favorite jazz bassist currently playing even recβd me his favorite Jarrett performance but i just canβt jibe
16.02.2026 13:08 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 2 π 0of course, if they were voting on something non-economic, that would be an even bigger problem for his frameworkβin that case the whole wage chart he started with would be irrelevant to the political question altogether. and it is! maybe the stagnation the workers experienced was not in real wages
16.02.2026 12:01 β π 2 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0on Mattβs chart, the people whose wages went up are the same people who voted for Trump. so either the wage gains he describes didnβt translate into felt economic improvement, which is exactly what AOC said that heβs dismissing, or they were voting on something non-economic entirely
16.02.2026 12:01 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0so sick of guys confusing political judgements for economic judgements they then go on to define as incorrect.
if the βconsumer class going Kaleckiβ story were true, youβd expect to see middle class guys who lost the evening coffee shops swinging hard toward Trump, but that didnβt happen, did it?
recently i've taken to jotting down a few paragraphs on each individual page of text in a given essay i'm reading in 16 sheet blue books. it's tripled the amount of time it takes me to read them, but things come out on the page i didn't even realize i'd thought. worth it
