May this finally, finally put to rest any idea that narratives of "illegal" immigration have anything whatsoever to do with legality, laws, "rules" which individuals can "choose" to follow. "Illegal" has always been about white supremacy & prejudice. πŸ—ƒοΈ

A photograph of the Wanto Co. grocery store in Oakland, CA. The owner, Tatsuro Matsuda, placed a sign reading "I AM AN AMERICAN" on the front of the store on December 8, 1941, the day after the Pearl Harbor raid. The photograph was taken by Dorthea Lange sometime in March 1942.

An immigration attorney told me a few weeks ago a client at the Everglades facility was put in a cage outside all day. A guard was bringing him a cup of water & another took it and dumped it.

The exposure and dehydration is torture in itself, but I didn’t realize the cage was this small. Evil.

It is both deeply ironic and profoundly funny that all these overconfident maga chud dudebros are convinced they'll be at the top of a meritocratic system, when in reality they're actually the ones who've benefited most from what they themselves characterize as non-meritocratic factors.

"Knowledge becomes data; teaching becomes delivery. What disappears are precious human capacitiesβ€”curiosity, discernment, presence. The result isn’t augmented intelligence but simulated learning: a paint-by-numbers approach to thought."

The real tragedy isn’t that students use ChatGPT to do their course work. It’s that universities are teaching everyoneβ€”students, faculty, administratorsβ€”to stop thinking. We’re outsourcing discernment. Students graduate fluent in prompting, but illiterate in judgment; faculty teach but aren’t allowed the freedom to educate; and universities, eager to appear innovative, dismantle the very practices that made them worthy of the name. We are approaching educational bankruptcy: degrees without learning, teaching without understanding, institutions without purpose.

Highly recommend this piece. The widespread, unthinking adoption of corporate AI programming undermines the purpose of education in a democratic society. www.currentaffairs.org/news/ai-is-d...

At times during the hepatitis B discussion, the committee acknowledged they didn't have data to support some of the things they were recommending - the suggestion, for instance, that the first dose of hepatitis B not be given before 2 months old.

The advisory committee on immunization practices has one job. And they didn’t do it here. From the @bostonglobe.com

A competent opposition party would call a presser and explain that while their party believes that voters should choose politicians and not the other way around, the Republican Supreme Court majority had previously said that extreme gerrymandering was legal if it was about partisanship but...

Simply amazing that the Supreme Court declared an end to legal race discrimination in the affirmative action case two years ago and now allows overt racism in both immigration arrests and redistricting.

Using race to help minorities? Bad. Using it to discriminate against them? Very, very good.

The blatant use of false, inaccurate histories to arrive at a decision the majority of the Court clearly wanted regardless of the facts is a feature of both Dred Scott and Dobbs. It’s an apt comparison. πŸ—ƒοΈ

Federal Judge Has No Interest In Taking Brett Kavanaugh’s Racial Profiling Opinion Seriously The Trump administration cited Kavanaugh’s infamous concurrence to justify its immigration arrests. Judge Beryl Howell was having none of it.

Fuck Kavanaugh stops all my homies hate Kavanaugh stops

(for purposes of this post I'm including a federal district judge who just rightly concluded that the Supreme Court's racial profiling order is *not* controlling precedent under the umbrella of 'my homies')

Last week, ICE arrested and separated a father and son after a routine check-in. Six-year-old Yuanxin had just enrolled in the first grade at an elementary school in Astoria. Now he's in custody, alone. ICE won't say where. This cruelty serves no one. It must end.

Considering History: The Chinese Exclusion Act and the Origins of β€œIllegal” Immigration | The Saturday Evening Post Ben Railton discusses The Chinese Exclusion Act and its impact on Chinese-American families throughout the 20th century.

U.S. immigration law started with laws explicitly & entirely designed to discriminate against & exclude arrivals from specific countries. Which is to say, federal immigration policy has from its outset been about defining certain communities as "illegal."
