A Dutch family in the fabrics trade built this 1930 mansion in Schaerbeek. Pacifists and anti-fascists, they sheltered refugees from Germany & Spain. Then resistants during WW2. The father, Alex Eekman, was arrested in 1942 and murdered at the Mauthausen camp.

Rooftop: six tiny rooms for maids; and a terrace with pergola where the view then stretched out of Brussels into Flanders.

Theodore Roosevelt Street, Schaerbeek. That makes Thomas Jefferson the only one of the Rushmore lads without a street in Brussels. Serves him right for swanning about in Paris.

Architect Henri Van Massenhove and his German partner Guillaume (Wilhelm) Löw won most of the façade prizes with houses called things like In den Boogen & In de Haalve Man. They wrote a book (in French) about their collaboration in the Flemish renaissance style, called Les Maisons Modernes

The result was that as cinemas, telephones, lifts, electricity and cars arrived in Brussels, a mainly francophone clientele was coopted into architectural cosplay based on the C16 Flemish renaissance, then in a hot war with art nouveau to define the national style. It won.

Place Colignon, Schaerbeek. Incomers acquiring plots here were forced to choose a façade for their new home from among the prize-winning entries in an 1896 public competition. These had to reflect the values of art "that the Renaissance spread among the civilized nations."

Vast 1910 mansion in Schaerbeek. On the bay, the motto in olde flemish reads ELKE VOGEL BOUWT ZYN NEST (every bird build its nest). The owner was a stockbroker called Mr Vogel (Bird).

Next door is the 1906 Brussels depot of the Brasserie et Laiterie de Haecht, the town next door to Werchter. Their beer arrived on the same tram. This seems like a system worth reviving. Horses took care of the last mile and the stables with glass awning are still there.
