You ask for a poem.
And so I write you a tragedy about
How a blade of grass
Becomes more and more difficult to offer.
And how as you grow older
A blade of grass
Becomes more difficult to accept.

27.09.2025 15:06 โ ๐ 4 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 0RESULTS OF THE PILOT * In dim light and at night improvements can be noted, but there are no particular benefits during the daytime. * Jaywalking was slightly reduced. The initial assessment before implementation of Flowell had shown a low number of jaywalkers at this location. * More than half of the drivers reported that the system made them more aware of the pedestrians and their respective priorities
I found this case study & evaluation of the #COLAS #Flowell system www.transoftsolutions.com/uk/transport... but it has no actual data! All I can find on COLAS website is this โฌ๏ธwhich doesn't seem to be a huge improvement (& as it says "there are no particular benefits during the daytime")
19.09.2025 16:45 โ ๐ 0 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 0There's been a crossing like this in Clarendon Rd, Portsmouth for nearly 4 years maps.app.goo.gl/gq8kLtgEwjCq.... I've not seen any evidence that it's notably safer (or indeed less safe) than a standard zebra - but I'm sure it's more expensive! www.highwaysmagazine.co.uk/Portsmouth-c...
19.09.2025 16:36 โ ๐ 0 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0Crossing patrols *right outside* school entrance shouldn't be needed (with School Streets or other design changes), apart from schools on main roads of course. But slightly further away from schools, where pupils come from multiple directions, it's harder to justify infra & patrols are more needed
19.09.2025 10:01 โ ๐ 1 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0John hasn't changed - that sounds *exactly* like the site visits I used to do with him 30 years ago ๐
18.09.2025 15:36 โ ๐ 1 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0Indeed. That can give space for a build out to create a more direct // crossing. The only real alternative is a signalled junction which is usually far too expensive!
10.09.2025 10:41 โ ๐ 3 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 0A zebra crossing but with cycle markings on the footway making it clear it's for cycling too, leading to cycle tracks either side
As a taster, here's another pre #TSRGD parallel crossing in #Whitstable (end of the #CrabAndWinkle trail). Photo is from 2014 showing cycle markings but they're mostly worn off now, so it *looks* like a standard zebra maps.app.goo.gl/dnZKpYQKNCG7...
10.09.2025 10:24 โ ๐ 2 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0I really need to restart my project on deconstructing parallel crossings, looking at how they're used in the real world, by *all* road users. IMO mid block crossings (which that effectively is, despite being near a junction) are the worst use case precisely because they require sharing footways.
10.09.2025 09:02 โ ๐ 6 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 2 ๐ 0I had a record of all UK parallel crossings (now a bit out of date), will look at it. Off the top of my head, there is this in Richmond Rd Hackney but it was implemented *before* #TSRGD 2016 so isn't a good example to use! maps.app.goo.gl/YdBkR1FH81ft...

We found Members of Parliament (MPs) use the language of climate "pragmatism" to avoid rapid change. It risks becoming a new discourse of delay.
