A federal court ruled that groups in #CancerAlley can proceed with a lawsuit seeking a moratorium on new toxic plants in two majority Black districts. The case argues current land policies are a vestige of slavery and violate the 13th & 14th Amendments earthjustice.org/orangegrove

The Winter Olympics kick off today, so we’re kicking off our call-outs. The games are sponsored by the fossil fuel industry...while they use fake snow. Ironic, right? Take action to hold the Olympics accountable: itm.earth#take-action-3

This week, our guest writer is Michael Mann, Presidential Distinguished Professor of Earth & Environmental Science at the University of Pennsylvania and co-author, with Peter Hotez, of Science Under Siege: How to Fight the Five Most Powerful Forces
that Threaten Our World.
Science Truly Is Under Siege
Nearly two years ago, my colleague Peter Hotez, a leading public health scientist, and I decided to join forces to write a book (Science Under Siege) about the opposition we’ve encountered in our two respective domains—climate and vaccine science—from bad actors with political, ideological, or financial motivations in attacking mainstream scientific findings.
We had no way of knowing just what sort of political environment the book would find itself in when it came out. With the reelection of Donald Trump to a second term in November 2024, science has not found itself under an unprecedented assault by the Trump administration and an enabling Republican Congress, stacked Supreme Court, and a complicit, increasingly plutocrat-owned media.
This poses a truly existential threat not just to those of us living in the United States, but to humanity and the planet. Climate change and worsening pandemics (thanks in part to climate change) each represent an existential threat. But an even greater overriding threat is the rampant spread, particularly via social media, of anti-science disinformation, almost exclusively from the political right, that renders it impossible for us to take the needed mitigating actions.
Billionaire techlords and supposed benevolent plutocrats aren’t going to come to save us. It’s up to the rest of us to take back our planet, while there is still time.
