A lot of you have been asking me what other CDs I bought in Margate, so here are some more hot new sensations.

Both stonkers. I do still like three or four songs on Remote, but it's much more... meditative. Labour Of Love slaps.

It is. I've had the mp3s forever but this is the first time I've seen a CD, so felt quite a coup for £1.50 (although Discogs suggest it's not rare, I'm just unobservant). Found later that 7th Time was tucked in the case too, if anyone needs the CD.

Nearly done now. Some of it's amazingly bad. Three Foot Blasts Of Fire! The Kanes have a knack for melody, but it's for about two bars every three songs.

187.5p to discover Hue And Cry's Remote isn't as good as I remember. I've been dying on that hill for 35 years.

A classic of the genre 'records you'd forgotten you own'.

Nearly all the Flowered Up "It's On - Sonia"s on YouTube are just "It's On". How many youngsters are sleepwalking through their lives thinking the "Sonia" remix is exactly the same as the album version? Can we even begin to measure the damage?

Oh, I have 12" copies of How Can I Love You More, Excited, Someday, Moving On Up, One Night In Heaven, Sight For Sore Eyes... that might be it. They're just disparaged for beating Pulp to the Mercury Prize. The Shaddap Ya Face of 90s pop-house.

Weird to me to see people judging, for instance, the George songs. Help! just IS. When it's the only album you have (my mum's along with her classical/stage musical LPs and modest but excellent collection of 7"s), it's the paragon of a long-playing pop record, beyond opinion.

I have no critical distance from Help! It's the only album I knew from the moment I was interested (six?) to the moment I got Rio for Christmas (10), and is therefore the Platonic form. All albums should be under 34 mins and contain a flute and a Buck Owens cover.

They told me Margate was hip, but I didn't appreciate HOW hip until I visited a charity shop.

Waayyyy ahead of you. (1987). I concur on all that – it was the first time I'd paid the old guys much attention. I got educated, and, of course, very sophisticated.

Technology too, I guess. The price of the Fairlight/studio possibilities excluding everyone but the fat cats, making them sound big and expensive so they got bigger and more expensive.
