She hit big as Rihanna was completely transforming the basic orientation of R&B, both vocally and in how she approached material. Would be interesting to write something about Rihanna's voice, which I said "relocated emotion from the diaphragm to the nasal cavity"

Leona Lewis also the absolute nadir (like....conceptually) of an attempt at old school signifying *without* impersonation. Just sounded extremely outdated to me

David Moore: Who’s featuring who here? This kind of retro-fetishist funk has been far more convincing coming from Bruno than Mark. But there are fussy Ronson fingerprints all over the tedious reverence — I can see Ronson high-fiving a bunch of session lifers — that ultimately dulls the spark Bruno Mars got out of “Treasure” and “Locked Out of Heaven.” Which makes this uptight, not uptown. My "Uptown Funk" blurb from when it came out was a little bit "losing the battle winning the war," I think -- was too prickly about *Ronson* as an impersonator (which is how I felt at the time but was kind of wrong) to appreciate the genius of it (it's an [8])

...where Bruno himself is a little generic by design, the sounds he surrounds himself with really crackle. Because he's always having a goof about it he can get away with a lot more breadth (see also his entrance music in different countries, like his Brazilian funk entrance)

Yeah, the successful impersonators really aren't soundalikes or cash-ins, but there is a deep sense of (willful and not derogatory) inauthenticity to Bruno channeled to "hey remember the [decade]" pastiche where this works. V different from mining old *sounds* in a generic way...

What was interesting in my Billboard perusal is that the original AmIdol crooners weren’t nearly as competitive with the big pop names as I thought. They did fine but not what (I suspect) Boone and Warren and maybe Teddy Swims are doing this year.

In the early 90s a lot of energy went to alt interestingly it’s now the Paula Abduls who have the old school alt energy. I suspect more kids will just ignore the US
