How does housing affect educational outcomes? Right-to-Buy gave tenants of houses the chance to own their home - and helped reduce educational inequality, as exam performance rose in the areas in question

Right-to-Buy gave council tenants the chance to own their homes. The policy has been criticised for its impact on housing, but this research finds pupils in areas that were high in RTB sales did better in exams.

The impact of the 2025 US tariff announcements on UK firms In the first half of 2025, the US and some of its trading partners announced significant changes to import tariffs. This column uses newly designed questions to study the impact of these changes on UK firms and to assess the level of trade uncertainty. On average, the majority of firms expect no material impact on their sales, investment, and prices; those that do expect it to be a relatively small negative impact. Tariffs are a new source of uncertainty for firms, although the level of uncertainty remains lower than for previous shocks such as Brexit, Covid-19, or the Russia-Ukraine war.

The UK’s new industrial strategy: what does it mean for Manchester? - Economics Observatory To succeed, the industrial strategy needs to build strong local ecosystems in places where the eight priority sectors can thrive. The example of Greater Manchester shows why investment must be joined-up and focused on making the city-region a more productive place to do business across the board.

The UK’s industrial strategy seeks to raise productivity, support high-value sectors and spread economic opportunity beyond London. @aadyabahl.bsky.social explores how to make industrial strategy work at a local level.

How an oil price crash sparked clean innovation: Insights from Norway The transition to clean energy will require a significant reallocation of technological investments away from fossil energy sources towards cleaner alternatives. This column investigates whether leveraging the technological capabilities in the fossil energy supply chain can help incentivise this reallocation with the required speed. Using data from Norway, the authors highlight an underexplored channel for renewable technologies – lower profitability in the fossil energy sector led to reallocation of R&D resources within firms, triggering a shift towards clean innovation.

ICYMI: Negative shocks to the fossil energy sector don’t just reduce dirty innovation – they can also drive a meaningful increase in clean technology development.

The battle for trade currency dominance: The dollar vs the renminbi in Argentina The US dollar has traditionally dominated the invoicing of international trade. But could other currencies one day replace it? This column examines a unique policy experiment in Argentina in 2023. Amid a severe dollar shortage, Argentina expanded its currency swap agreement with the People’s Bank of China. The share of imports from China invoiced in renminbi surged rapidly from zero to nearly 50%, displacing the US dollar. Using rich firm-level data on trade and banking, the authors show that lack of dollar availability and connections with a Chinese state-owned bank played a key role in promoting renminbi use.
