New research. How has Brexit affected UK trade?
We find TCA reduced goods exports by 6.4%, imports by 3.1%
Smaller firms hardest hit. Around 16,400 firms stopped exporting to the EU entirely
But larger firms' exports unaffected, contributing to relatively small fall in overall trade 1/
"This divergence has increased costs and reduced trade to the EU.β A new @thecitp.bsky.social report finds that British food sales to the EU have fallen by almost a fifth since Brexit. Read more: www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/poli...

Policy takeaway: Transport mode substitution impacts both economic welfare and the environment. Policymakers must design strategies that balance economic efficiency with environmental sustainability. 8/9
22.11.2024 15:47 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0Substitution is not always beneficialβοΈ
Relying on carbon-intensive air transport to offset rising sea costs can increase emissions, undermining the effectiveness of policies targeting maritime trade. 7/9
Even when transport costs rise globally, the impact can vary:
π« Developed countries are more exposed to higher air transport costs.
π’ Low- and middle-income countries suffer more from maritime shocks. 6/9
Substitution reduces welfare losses from Russian airspace closure by ~4% compared to a no-substitution case.
This underscores the importance of having viable transport alternatives. 5/9
Own calculations based on Flighradar24 data on a Lufthansa flight.
I tackle this in two steps:
1οΈ) I Estimate the elasticity of substitution between transport modes, leveraging Russiaβs airspace closure.
2οΈ) I Combine this estimate with a Ricardian model that accounts for multiple transport modes, substitution, and endogenous costs to simulate policy scenarios. 4/9
Key questions:
1οΈ) How do shocks to specific transport modes influence international trade?
2οΈ) How crucial is substitution between transport modes for welfare?
3/9
Disruptions in transport are becoming more frequent, deeply affecting global trade flowsβΌοΈ
Quoting @unctad.bsky.socialβs latest Review of Maritime Transport: βGlobal maritime chokepoints are under pressure, exposing the vulnerability of supply chains.β 2/9

I am updating a large set of datasets from Eurostat and the procedures defined in the "#Automating #Eurostat in #Stata", a guide I wrote on my personal blog in 2015 still works!!
Effectively you can automate the whole workflow.
