On this, only the latest of sombre anniversaries this year, let's leave aside for a day the arguments over right or wrong, and consider the objective human cost.

Let's leave today for the victims - then and afterwards - and for the "hibakusha" whose suffering continued long after their survival.

Made me think of this 👇 and how campaigns ostensibly around the rights and experiences of one group inevitably resonated with and drew in others, and how these groups found common cause in each other's struggles.

Valuable for today when we seem further apart than ever.

A great and, as someone themselves reading the book for the first time, essential read - another demonstration of the need to treat memoirs, autobiographies etc with more than a pinch of salt, and as presentations that the authors (in this case, ghost author) make of their lives, thoughts and deeds.

I would add that the way Herrmann articulates his string writing - with down bow strokes on every stabbing beat - makes the orchestra reenact the murder itself, and makes them complicit in Bates's crimes.

Dissonance aside of CDU politicians attending Bayreuth whilst decrying "left" or "imported" antisemitism elsewhere, it's both interesting and revealing how comfortable they are being seen there to begin with; UK politicians would avoid this stuff like the plague for fear of being seen as "elitist".

This to me is what happens when you hollow out secondary and tertiary education to be calibrated overwhelmingly in outcomes (what you get vs how you get there), yet also stymie other further/higher education routes as viable alternatives - e.g. preaching apprenticeships with no money to back it up.

I wrote on RAN some years back - strange to think how it still holds such visceral power after 40 years. Go see it in the cinema if you can!

I've long thought that MFLs seem difficult merely because we're not used to approaching languages as systems; we learn our native languages by copying and imitating when we're young and our brains are like sponges.

Nazis especially visible in my part of Berlin at the moment. Shaven heads and Helly Hansen tracksuit tops (HH for Heil Hitler); Ellesse tracksuit tops (worn so they can show off the SS symbol). It’s wild how in some German towns this is as natural a part of youth culture as hip-hop is in the US.

I was aware of Lonsdale being used for this in the past (LoNSDAle) but this is new and very disturbing - presumably difficult to police owing to deniability...?

I wish I could read the article to get the full context, but for me: writing is communication, and therefore a 2-way street; while the reader should do some(/more than none of the work), especially on complex issues, it's also on the author as the initiator to bridge the gap as feels appropriate.
