30. Freakhunter
Another game that adapts grid-based first person movement into a rarely seen genre mash-up: first person shooter! And by God does it work with buttery smooth movement and arcade sensibilities in respect to pacing. It's a simple game where every design consideration is meaningful.
29. Psychopomp
I'm noticing a trend in adapting old school grid-based movement to indie games, particularly horror themed. Psychopomp uses the grid to heighten the tension by limiting visibility and freedom of movement, then combines it with my favorite aspect of DOS gaming: a sick ass UI.

I mourn internet forums which meant the death of community fan games. The Nameless Mod is a 2000s era shitpost in appearance but at its core is a fan community creation that rivals and frequently exceeds Deus Ex with multiple branching paths and callbacks to your actions.

27. Beyond the Edge of Owlsgard
Point and click designers forget that death can be a learning experience and fun. Owlsgard is a great adventure in its own right but uses death (with checkpoints, mind) to express the hardships of its talking animal world being invaded by an oppressive evil.
26. Else Heart.Break()
This game has everything I crave: lo-fi retro aesthetic, sprawling urban setting, a simulated world with NPC schedules, and every object can be hacked. It's like hipster The Matrix but also totally inscrutable and demands you put in the work to get a unique experience.

I don't remember what the input is called but Steam has an "alternate spelling" block in your project page that you can use to catch variations in search fields. So "sword and sorcery" could appear as "sword & sorcery" even "sord and sworcery" if that's your pleasure.
